During the day Megan had gone several times to check on Lady Rosalind's health and to bring her the brew to drink that would help her rest. As per her request, with Kay's sister, Edith, Annie, and Lady Eleanor had remained to keep her company, alternating.

She had also spent the day preparing potions, infusions and all the medicines to continue treating the wounded.

All that time she had been followed by Parsy like a bloodhound. The boy had not lost sight of her for a moment, instructed, no doubt by William, to be her bodyguard. Herb supplies were, unfortunately, already running low, Megan noted.

As soon as possible I must go and gather more, she enjoined herself.

It was almost time for dinner, and William and Kay were nowhere to be seen. Waiting for them to return so she could talk to both knights was unnerving her. She needed to get out of those walls that were giving her a sense of suffocation.

She paced back and forth restlessly thinking and rethinking about what had happened in those days. Unable to calm herself down she decided to start playing the harp a little. Thoughts passed quickly through her mind to the dancing rhythm of her fingers on the strings of the musical instrument.

There were still many points to be clarified. Lady Alicia, Megan was now convinced, was the spy they were looking for and perhaps some kind of hit man. But why? What had Sir Richard discovered? And then... what had her aunt kept from her? And what had made William so cruel to women? Too many questions and still no clear answers.

As usual.

The future Earl de Clare and his cousin, along with the small handful of men in their retinue, returned late in the afternoon the following day.

The sound of the hooves of several horses in the yard, which Megan heard from her bedroom window, alerted her of the return of the two cousins.

At last!

Now she could rest easier.

Her heart, inexorably pounded in her chest at the mere thought of meeting William.

She decided it was time to leave her room and look for something to relieve the tension that had been building up, before talking to him.

She went to the garden her aunt had created years ago to finish beautifying it; work begun the previous days with Annie.

The inspection tour had been frustrating! They had stayed an extra day trying to follow tracks that had been lost at some point, however. William was looking forward to a hot bath and something to put under his teeth. He had promised not to leave Megan alone, but he also had responsibilities to the people of Caerphilly.

Those days allowed him, however, to clear his mind about the various revelations made to him.

How much trouble could that woman get into, in a castle, in a single day?
