As soon as she shouted those words, Megan paralyzed. It was unlike her to lose control like that. She bit the left side of her lower lip angrily.

Goodness, why did everything have to be so complicated?

<<I understood perfectly well>> he said in a faint voice and with an almost deadly calm.

That no said so emphatically had made it clear that she was not even willing to accept his unconditional love. Perhaps he disgusted her because of his reputation as a libertine with women?

But she had not shied away from his attentions; in fact, she had made it clear that she did not mind them.

William was really confused. Perhaps she thought he was just an unrepentant profiteer of the female sex?

He, however, promised her that he would behave like a good husband. So, what did she really want? Did she want safety? The de Clare family had always protected the Giffard. Did she want to secure offspring? He didn't have to be the one to bear her children. Did she want economic stability?

No, she did not seem to be interested in such things. He was falling back into the abyss Abell had put him in. He felt completely empty and suddenly exhausted. He was not asking to be loved, but he wanted to be able to love her freely.

If even this was not allowed to him, then what would become of him and how could he carry on a union in such a way? He had deluded himself that he was capable of it.

Megan sensed the emptiness that was forming in William's soul. He had misunderstood her reaction and now looked like a wounded animal with a black hole that was digging and tearing at his heart.

She was shocked, frightened, surprised, and happy at the same time at what he had just told her.

Holy smokes. What should I do? What is right to do?

She wanted to jump and dance with joy, but how could she be happy knowing that their feelings for each other amounted to a death sentence for him?

William, in any case, suddenly seemed as if he was already dying inside. His soul was already going out like a worn-out candle. Then wasn't it equivalent to being like dead?

Seeing him resigned to unhappiness made her feel as if her heart had been caught in the grip of a wolf trap.

She had to explain herself. Determined to clear up the misunderstanding she brought her hand close to his face to caress him.

<<Don't do that>> he intimated to her.

<<I don't want your sympathy>>.

Megan huffed.

<<You think I'm pitying you?>> she asked incredulously.

<<You don't understand ANYTHING>> she said, emphasizing the last word.
