Megan was aware that her body was severely tested and that her consciousness had detached from it. It is a defense mechanism for not feeling pain, she thought immediately. She could hear voices in the distance, probably of those beside her. Fortunately, she could not sense their sensations, their feelings, otherwise her situation would have been even more difficult to accept.

She knew that she was not yet dead, but also that she was in such a state that she was only a step away from it. Her body was struggling to survive, but her consciousness was not reacting with the same determination.

Death was not as terrible as she had always expected. In fact, there was a lot of peace, tranquillity and no pain in that state.

She still did not know where she was or if she was really somewhere and not just a self-defence reaction of her mind. Perhaps consciousness, when the time to die had to come, established a mechanism that helped the essence of people leave their bodies without feeling too much physical or emotional pain, distancing themselves from things and people.

She felt light and seemed to be floating in a vacuum, without time or space. She had no idea how long she had been in that state and, in fact, did not care much. The feeling of calmness and lightness in her being did not make her feel the need to struggle back to the reality of duties, pain and death.

Maybe there was something else, but what? What could she not remember? Could it be that this was all her life was about?

Just when she was thinking that she would not mind staying in that state, something suddenly tore her from that bliss, taking her to a dark place.

Now she was not only consciousness, thought, but could feel and glimpse a bodily form of herself. She had the feeling that her feet were touching something soft almost fluid. She tried to walk, but her steps made no sound, and even there seemed to be a space without beginning and end.

The feeling of lightness had vanished and now she felt the weight of her body, although in a different way than in reality. A small glow began to show itself and Megan instinctively began to direct her steps in that direction.

Suddenly she began to hear a voice. She did not recognize it. It was unfamiliar to her, but it kept calling to her as if it knew her.

<<Megan, you can hear me, right? You can hear me, but you can't see me yet. Give me a moment I will try to project my body form>> a woman's voice told her.

<<Who are you?>> she asked her instinctively.

<<Give me some more time and I will explain everything>> was answered and then there was silence.

Next to a small flame suspended from the ground that produced no heat but only light, a woman of unknown features materialized.

She was as tall as she was, thin, and had the most beautiful eye color Megan had ever seen.
