Simon was stuck between two places. He knew that the hallucinations weren't real, but they sure felt real. However, he wished that they were actually taking place in reality. He'd do anything to be in Charlene's presence.
Sometimes, when he hallucinated her, he would try to focus on what she looked like. The image of her would fade immediately. He grew frustrated because of this. Simon thought he heard her voice at times, but wasn't able to actually see her.
He felt trapped. It was indeed like a looping sequence; he sees her, she fades away, he hears her voice, and that's where it restarts.
For a brief moment, Charlene's unreal presence would feel like it was the most real thing ever.

Until he thought too much about her.
