"How are you doing? Really?" I asked her.

"I'm good, waiting for college responses. Edward and I have been talking about things and I've set a lot of boundaries. He's understanding as of right now, I guess we'll just have to see what happens." she said.

"That's good, you know what you want and you go for it. Don't let anyone tell you what's best for you." Emmett said.

"The two of you showed me how to do that and now I'm putting in the work." she smiled.

"You staying for a while?" I asked Bella.

"No, I just ... I needed to talk it through with you before anything happened." she said.

"You don't have to leave."

"I'm gonna go grocery shopping and spend some time with Charlie, he's been super stressed with everything that's happening. I'm gonna make his favorite for dinner and Billy's coming over to watch the game. It'll distract him."

"Alright, have a good day."

"You too." she said, hugging me before leaving.

"How are things going with her and Edward?" I asked Emmett.

"They've been spending time together and he's much happier. I wouldn't say they're 'together' again and it kind of doesn't feel like it but both of them seem to be happier." he smiled.

"She's doing things her way this time and that's good. He'll have to figure out how to compromise if he really wants her back."

"That's gonna be his biggest problem. Edward thinks he always knows what's right and then acts accordingly to that. I hope he doesn't mess this up."

"I don't think he will, not again. He'll lose her for good if he does."

"I'm surprised that you're okay with the idea of them together again." Emmett said as he cleaned Ava up from her mess.

"I don't know that it will happen but she's happy about where she is and what she's doing. The two of them are starting to have a friendship again and if that goes back to being a relationship then it'll be healthy this time." I smiled.

"You're amazing. Right, isn't mommy amazing?" he asked Ava in baby voice and it's just the cutest thing ever.

I heated up some pancakes and sausage for Jeremy, who devoured the plate as I expected him to do.

"Hey, you got a computer I can use?" he asked.

"Yeah, why?"

"I wanna look for a job, livin off of you ain't an option."

"You can live here for as long as you want whether you're working or not. Do not give me lip, Jeremy Rossi, I swear to God you'll regret it." I stated, turning away from the sink to look at him.

"You're scary." he muttered.

"Glad we agree on that."

"How the hell do you deal with her?" he asked Emmett in a more muted tone.

"She's amazing and I love her."

"Brave and foolish man."

"What kind of job did you want to find?" I asked him.

"Depends on what's in the area, I don't really know."

"You think of going to the VA? There's not one in Forks but there is in Port Angeles I think, or probably Seattle."

"I'll look into it."

"My computer is in the top drawer of my night table by the door." I told him.

"Password?"

"There isn't one cause I'm the only one that uses it and it doesn't leave the house."

"Alright then, I'm not gonna find anything I shouldn't be seeing right?"

"Nope, all the sex toys are in the closet."

He spit out his juice and if Emmett could blush, I bet he'd be tomato red right now and I think this is my favorite moment ever. Jeremy glared at me and Emmett was stuck on stupid for about five minutes. I swear I've never seen anything funnier.

"You walked right into that." I smirked.

"You're horrible, you're an absolutely terrible person and I'm leaving."

"Baby, are you okay?" I asked Emmett.

"Dadadadadaaaaa!"

"Emmett ..."

"I don't think I ... I don't know how to handle that." he said.

"I broke a vampire." I whispered, smiling at him.

"I think you did. So, where exactly are those toys?" he asked, winking at me.

"Maybe I'll show them to you one day. I haven't needed them in a while."

"Okay, no more talk about this in front of the baby. No distracting me either so we're going to the living room." he said.

"Ah, I really do love my life." I smiled, turning around to finish washing the dishes.

The next days passed quickly and before I knew it, battle day arrived. I told Bella to come here but she said she didn't want to put me in danger again. Everyone, including Bella, decided that it would be best for her to be on the reservation. Charlie's gonna be down there as well with Billy so Bella's gonna join them. Thankfully, we all agreed on my house not being a danger zone so I'm staying home with my people.

"You be careful and come back to me." I whispered to Emmett as we laid in my bed.

"I promise I will, we're ending this today." he said, leaning in to kiss me.

"You come back." I insisted.

"Yeah, I promise you, I'll see you tonight."

He spent the morning watching movies with Ava and me in the living room and left around noon to go meet up with the others. Jeremy and Grandma Morgan kept me distracted, Ava Rae kept me busy, but in the corner of my mind, I knew what was happening in a clearing not too far from my house. I don't know how long this is gonna take and they couldn't give me a time frame so I sat down with Ava and Jeremy to watch another movie.

Grandma Morgan walked into the room with some sandwiches for us and we all got comfortable on the sofa. I know my brother is watching me very closely but I have been able to keep up appearances for the most part. After the first movie was over, Grandma got up and walked out of sight and then we heard a sudden thud.

"Stay here ..." my brother said.

"Jeremy ..."

"You stay here ... grandma?" he called out.

I put Ava in the playpen and turned to look over the sofa as my brother slowly walked out of the living room. Suddenly he came back in walking backward with Grandma Morgan in front of him. Her eyes were wide, glassed over with tears ... and fear.

"What's going on?" I asked them.

"You can't ... it's not ..." she stammered.

"Grandma ... Jeremy, what's happening?"

"Hey, baby." I heard and my heart stopped, it literally stopped as the intruder made himself visible.

"Chris."

"Aren't you happy to see me?" He asked with a smile and his eyes blazed a bright crimson color.
