"Papa, do you need any help?"
Dallas looked up with a broad smile. "No, but I wouldn't mind a little company from my second son."
I blushed with a broad grin. "Aww, of course. I love hanging out with you."
I briefly hugged Dallas' shoulders while he cleaned his horse's hoof. He had gotten a big draft horse as he'd always wanted. Gentle Giants is still one of his favorite shows.
"Do you regret moving here ten years ago?"
Dallas snorted with laughter while I petted Steele, his gray Clydesdale. "Why would you even ask that, Emil? I've never been happier."
"Well, you left the state you were born to live with Denver and I, so I thought you might be missing the people you left behind."
Dallas lowered Steele's left front hoof and turned to look at me. "Emil, I don't miss anyone. I can still call and visit if necessary, but this is my home. I love living on the same property with you and Denver. I am within walking distance of being able to have meals with you, watch TV beside you both, and even sleep in my room at the main house. I can invite you two to my home anytime and you'll be here in minutes. Nothing makes me happier than that, my sweet boy."
I had teared up with a happy smile. "Okay, Papa. I'm sorry for thinking otherwise. Sometimes, I can't help but feel like we were wrong because you have this faraway look in your eyes."
Dallas chuckled. "That's only because I'm thinking about the past, not missing my old position. I am so free here I'm not sure what to do with myself sometimes."
I reached up for a hug and Dallas easily lifted me, so I hugged his shoulders and kissed his cheek. Steele snuffled my face and lipped my hand while I petted his dark gray nose. Dallas smiled while he watched me interact with his very own gentle giant, then gave me a horse treat to give to Steele. I felt Dallas' lips land on my cheek and snuggled closer as he whispered how much he loved me as both a second son and official son-in-law.
"I love you too, Papa. Thank you for being such a wonderful, loving man who raised his son—my husband—to be just like you."
Dallas teared up a bit and squeezed my form a bit more firmly. "You're very welcome, Emil. And thank you for loving my son and I so much."
I grinned with reddened eyes and kissed his cheeks, then Dallas set me down onto the ground again. I hung out with him and we talked while he worked, although I did get a fresh pail of water and helped Dallas ready Steele's stall to put him away for the night. I watched my father-in-law strap a blanket over his horse, then stepped back to allow him to close the door for the night. There was some grain and hay in there as well, so Steele was well-taken care of as per usual.
I headed inside his home first, where Denver was already working on dinner for us three. I hugged him from behind when he wasn't using a knife and heard his chuckle.
"Hi, baby."
"Hi, Den."
"Are you excited to see Carver and Sawyer tomorrow?"
"Yeah," I replied happily as I moved to his side. "I'm happy Sawyer could go with Carver to the last job since it was out of the country. From their pictures and videos, it looked like they had a lot of fun."
Denver hugged my shoulders with his left arm. "Do you want to go overseas again?"
"Yeah, I do. I don't know if Papa would want to come with us, but I think it'd be fun."
Denver pouted, making me raise an eyebrow. He chuckled and pecked my lips. "Don't you want to spend some alone time with me, Em?"
I rolled my eyes with a playful groan. "Of course I do."
