Chapter 1
Nova
My alarm wakes me from my peaceful slumber into the reality of school in thirty minutes. I take a few deep breaths that I do every morning before school to help me prepare for the day.
I toss my blanket off and get up, the smell of pancakes fill my nose and I feel my spirits lift a little. I quickly do my business in the bathroom and find an outfit for the day that considers a grey sweater and black leggings. This October weather is no joke.
My feet takes me into the kitchen where mom is cooking and my little sister Nyla sitting at the table like a pig waiting to be served.
"Why aren't you dressed?" I ask when I noticed she's still in her pajamas.
"Chill out ms perfection, we go to the same school," she rolls her eyes. Doesn't make up for the fact we're always late.
Dad walks into the kitchen with his work suit on, fixing the sleeves on his shirt. He gives mom a kiss on the cheek.
"Smells delicious," he coos and gives her another kiss.
I smile. I've desired my parent's relationship since I found out what love was. They were the ones I looked up to most.
Mom serves our pancakes and I instantly drown mine in syrup.
"Daddy I found this really pretty dress online that I have to get for the charity gala," my sister says emphasis on the have.
"Show it to me later okay," dad says and kisses the top of her head.
My little sister is the definition of a daddy's girl, literally gets anything she wants and they don't bat an eye.
I check the time on my phone. "Go get dressed now before I leave you Nyla."
She rolls her eyes before stuffing the last bit of the food down her throat and runs upstairs. My dad takes her seat and looks at me with a smile.
"How are those college applications going?"
I force a smile. "Good."
"Which ones have you applied to?" He asks.
"I applied to Boston University and Ohio University." I hurry up eating because I've been dreading this conversation.
"Anywhere else?" He questions with a raised brow.
I shake my head and I see his expression drop a little.
"What about UT Austin or Yale?"
I shrug and check the time on my phone. "Nyla we have to go!" I put my plate in the sink and give mom a quick kiss before grabbing my keys and heading out the door.
The air hits me like a smack in the face. This Halloween is gonna be so cold. I unlock my jeep wrangler and quickly turn the heat on.
Ever since I started my senior year my dad has been up my ads about which college I should go to. We haven't had the conversation but I already made my pick down to two. He thinks I want to follow in his footsteps but I don't have the balls to tell him I want to major in journalism instead.
Nyla finally appears out the house and runs to get in.
"Took you long enough, I was about to get interrogated by college questions," I roll my eyes.
"Well hurry up and make your mind up because I want your room."
Just because I knew she didn't have her seatbelt on yet I stomp my foot on the brake which causes her to fly forward with a thump.
It's almost hard to contain my laughter as she begins screaming at me but I tone her out by turning up my radio.

The day was finally almost over. Thirty four minutes before I'm free from this hell hole.
I've been alone for a week now because my best friend went out of town. This week has actually made me realize she's my only friend.
"Alright class, there's a project I want to present before we close up for the day."
The class groans in unison. My journalism class is my favorite class, definitely considering I want to be a writer so this was perfect. I've learned so much more than my other classes, but maybe that's because I actually do the work.
Most of the students in here treat it as a free block and just do whatever but this grade also counts my advanced diploma.
"I want this completed before our Senior trip in December so I'm assigning everyone partners." He turns on his board and there's a list of names. "Find your name. Find your partner, and for the remaining time these will be your new seats."
I squint my eyes and search for my name, I keep telling my parents I need glasses.
Nova and Sean.
My eyebrows raise surprisingly. I didn't know he was in this class. He was seated in the back with his head down so I grab my things and sit down in the empty seat beside him, a few of the jocks laughing as I do so.
I don't really know much about Sean besides what I hear around the hallways. He was very quiet and strange, ever since his mom died a year ago. I kinda sad for him because the football players treat him like shit. I tap his shoulder and it takes him a minute to look at me.
"I guess we're partners," I tell him with a small smile. He cuts his eyes and puts his head back down.
Well okay..
"Alright now. This years project is Poetry. You and your partner will write a poem about anything, doesn't matter what it is and present it to the class."
That's it?
Everyone murmurs and I turn to Sean. His head was still down and it bothered me a little thinking if he heard.
I tap his shoulder and he looks up again, more annoyed. "What?"
"Did you hear everything because I'm not explaining it over," I say.
"Does it matter? It's probably stupid anyway so I'll just copy you," he shrugs nonchalantly and I scrunch my face.
"If you think I'm doing this by myself, you're eating dick. If I do, you aren't getting credit at all and you're gonna fail so if you rather be a dumbass than do something as easy as this, go ahead."
He was silent as I stared into his dark brown eyes.
No way I was going to deal with his bull shit.
