the girls were so big back in the day that their rise to fame was frequently compared to the beatlemania! the brought something fresh to the market; "girl power" was not a term people would usually say, but with the help of their sudden stardom, it became their signature.
this album has their biggest hits. "wannabe", "2 become 1", and "mama" are among three of the songs that people would mention when asked to name a spice girls hit.
i think it would be accurate to say that they paved the way for girl groups. they rose in the mid 90s, and before them, i don't think a girl group made as much noise as them (except for the ones that became big in the 60s/70s, and even then, they didn't achieve what the girls did for british pop music).
