Nishida's POV

You're fired.

On Sunday morning, those words I had heard on Saturday kept ringing in my head like an annoying bell. I had a splitting headache from crying myself to sleep last night, so I went to the bathroom to wash my face. I almost jumped at the sight of myself in the mirror. I had dark bags under my eyes that made me look more like the sleep deprived girl I had been called by a stranger.

I rolled back under the bedsheets and grabbed my phone to check the notifications. There was a reminder to go to church. However, I was too tired, so I reached for the Bible on my nightstand to read in Bed instead. I wasn't in the mood to see anyone today, for fear of releasing my anger and sadness onto them. My life was a mess!

Ring - Ring - Ring!

I almost opened to a random page when, letting out a frustrated groan, I picked my phone up to see an unknown phone number calling. I didn't want to reply, but the curious side of me made me do otherwise.

"Hello?" I hesitated.

"Uh, hi! Is this Nishida? Lucas calling."

I asked the first question that came to mind.

"Where'd you get my number?"

"Oh, um, I gotta thank Bel for that," he sheepishly replied. I almost got mad, almost, but found myself relieved Lucas was the one who had my number. Had it been Shizuki, yes, I would have been livid.

"You sound...off. Is everything okay?" he asked in a concerned tone of voice.

"It's either you have a bad memory or you're desperately looking for a conversation starter," I snapped.

I instantly regretted that. Why was I snapping at Lucas? He wasn't the one I was angry at. That is exactly why I decided not to see people today. I've always had trouble controlling my anger.

"Sorry. It's just..." I trailed off. What was it? There was no excuse for what I'd just done.

"Well, I was calling to apologize for...you know...bringing Shizuki yesterday," he said, lowering his voice. I could imagine him bowing his head in shame. But why was he apologizing? I admired that, though. Humble, unlike that friend of his.

"Oh, no! I— it's totally fine. You... didn't expect that... did you?"

Silence.

"Lucas? Are you still there?"

More silence.

"Lucas?"

"...I did. I know Shizuki well, Nishida. I know why he behaves the way he does. What I didn't expect was for you to get fired just for standing up for yourself," he explained.

I scoffed. "Tell that to Mme. Josée," I muttered.

"To who?"

"Oh, no one. I mean, I appreciate the fact that you apologized, but there's nothing to forgive. I wasn't angry in the first place," I said quickly.

"You got me relieved. Thanks," he said after a pause.

"No problem."

"Would you forgive Shizuki if he apologized?" he asked.

That was a really good question. Would I? Then again, I didn't expect him to apologize. He was probably waiting for me to do so.

"I don't think that's ever gonna happen," I replied honestly.
