gabriel was out on a run with rick, 'proving' himself as he called it. after the terminus incident he felt as if it was partially his fault. you tried to cheer him up as much as possible and let him know that it wasn't his fault. yet he never listened, he'd been getting tougher though and you were proud of him. before the apocalypse you would've never seen yourself dating a priest, yet here you are. you were happy with gabriel even if you both didn't agree on some things you never let that bother your relationship.
you were waiting at the gates for rick and gabriel to return. rick had said it would be a 2 day trip and today was the 3rd day, you'd grown worried but you knew gabriel would be okay. he had rick with him and he was getting pretty good with a knife! you raised your head up to see the gate opening and rick driving through. gabriel got out of the car and you ran over to him
"gabe!" you smiled hugging him, he looked tired which was natural but he seemed like something was bothering him
"hello y/n" he forced a smile hugging you back
"are you alright?" you asked him, noticing he wasn't being his normal cheerful self.
"just fine" he said looking at you
"gabe, don't lie! it's a sin!" you teased
"don't joke about things like that" he said sternly
"what's wrong?" you sighed as you knew something was bothering him.
he brushed you off once more and a while later you were in your shared house making dinner for him.
"so how was the run?" you asked setting down a drink in front of him
"it went quite well, we got a lot of supplies" he said reassuringly
"that's great!" you said cheerfully and he smiled
"have any close calls or anything?" you asked sitting down beside him. he took a deep breathe and looked at you
"i shouldn't have made it this long" he said
"what?" you asked confused
"i should've died when the outbreak first started" he breathed
"no! no you shouldn't have!" you protested
he gently smiled at you
"face it y/n, im not cut out for this world" he sighed
"what happened out there? why are you saying all this?" you asked worried
"rick almost died because of me" he said sadness in his voice
"but he didn't! he's alive! and so are you" you said smiling at him
"but i shouldn't be" he replied
"that's not true gabe! you've fought hard! even if it doesn't seem like it" you said.
you hated seeing him like this unfortunately as much as you hated it, it was normal for him. he always felt like he should've died sooner and you couldn't help but feel bad for him, he was strong even if he didn't see it.
"and you" he started "you deal with me all the time, when you could have anyone!" he said sighing
"that's not true gabe, i love you and love being with you! your incredible and even if you can't see it your strong." you smiled at him. he smiled back at you finally giving up
"i guess your right, it's just tough sometimes"he said
"i know gabe, i know. but you'll always have me" you kissed his cheek
"thank you y/n. I'm grateful to have someone as great as you" he smiled at you
"well father, im glad i met someone like you too!" you teased calling him father.
gabriel laughed "you always have to tease dont you"
"of course I do" you smiled at him
