I personally think that Mario and Luigi getting new designs is just out of the question, for both the actual Nintendo company and Smg4. Nintendo isn't going to suddenly change the face they've been marketing for years and Smg4 has confirmed he won't be changing the designs of his versions of the characters either.
The only exception is to the Movie variants, but even they have only the smallest of differences. So really, outside of looks for a new power up or oddesy costumes, Mario and Luigi don't need redesigns.
But on that note, If The Wario bros were to get their iconic outfits in the movies, have them rob a crazy cap store to make them the costumes. It only makes sense.
