His Next Victim
Chapter 18
Cain's POV
As soon as the call came in, a large smile spread on my face. A maid had reported two people entering the mansion that she worked in. She said one looked like a teenage girl. The minute the words left the lady's mouth, I knew exactly who it was that broke into that house; Jade.
My body hummed in anticipation. We were only minutes away from where the crime was taking place, and I couldn't be more excited. I wasn't the only one bouncing up and down in their seats. Jude sat beside me with the largest smile I have ever seen. I knew the man loved his daughter, but I never thought he would miss her this much.
I looked out the windshield and pressed the gas peddle harder. The large mansion finally came into view. It might have looked small from a distance, but as we got closer, it grew. Pretty soon, I had to turn my head completely in order to see one end, and we were still at the gate.
How had she known which window to go into? How had she gotten past this monstrosity of a gate? Both the questions were something that only one person could answer, and that person was Jade.
"Now, don't be getting too excited. She may be gone already. You never know..." Jude trailed off and I knew we were both thinking the same thing. Please, Jade; be there.
"Look, Cain," Jude said. I followed his finger to a familiar Jeep. I had already come to the conclusion that it was Jeff's vehicle. Jade would never go around in something that dull. She loved her flashy cars, and a Jeep was definitely not flashy.
"It's Jeff's. Which means, they either haven't left yet, or they are running?"
"They're running. It's what I would do if I heard sirens. They are probably hitting the edge of the woods now. The question is; which exit would they use?"
Jude looked at me for an answer. "The back door?"
He flashed me a smile. "Yes, the back door. When you exit the back door, the major woods are behind it or to the left. I would run to the left. You have a better chance of getting to a road if you stay parallel to it while running."
I thought about what he said and realized that every word of it was right, but I did have a question. "How did you know where the woods are? It's dark, and we haven't even gotten into the gate."
"I scouted it," he said absentmindedly.
"You scouted it?" I echoed.
"Yes, do you think I wouldn't know where my girl is going?"
Another piece of the puzzle clicked in my head. "Jeff is keeping tabs for you isn't he?"
He threw me a sheepish smile. "If you tell her, I will kill you."
"If I tell her, she will kill both you and Jeff."
Jude nodded. "Now, let's get inside this gate and go find our girl."
I found it slightly odd that he was calling Jade 'our girl', but I let it slide without making a comment. I had other things to think about. One being where exactly was she?
Glancing at Jude, I watched as he pulled a small USB size thing out of his pocket and ran it over the key pad. To my amazement, the gates opened for us.
"What is that?" I asked.
He tsked at me. "Government secret, and frankly boy, you don't have the clearance."
Sitting back in my chair, I tried to keep the grimace off my face. I didn't have government clearance? How did Jude have it if I didn't?
"Don't think too hard, you might hurt yourself," Jude said while jumping out the car. I slammed on my breaks, but it was too late. I could already see his white shift running towards the back of the house. I thought we agreed she would be in the woods.
