His Next Victim
Chapter 16
Cain’s POV
I looked down at the strangled man, then up at the forensic technician.
“How did she strangle someone this tall?” I asked him dumbfounded.
“It looks like it was done from an upwards angle, so she most likely jumped on his back or was standing on something,” he replied before going back to work.
Turning my head to the side, I tried picturing Jade standing on top of a stool to reach the guy's neck and winded up laughing my ass off. The people around me looked at me like I was insane, but I didn’t care. Okay, so maybe it was a little odd to laugh at a murder scene, but if they knew Jade like I did, they would laugh too.
There was no way in the world that she would demean herself by jumping on the man’s back, and she wouldn’t have had time to bring a chair behind the guy. I looked down at the man and tried putting it together in my head. Nothing, not a single damn thing. The first question I would ask her when I caught up with her would be how in the hell she did it.
My boring old ring tone sounded from my phone, and I pulled it out my pocket. Glancing at the screen, I groaned. If it weren't for the fact that the man was my boss, I wouldn’t answer.
“Hello?”
“Got another crime scene for you,” he said without exchanging pleasantries. I guess that’s how it works in the world now.
“Give me the address. How are your boys back in the office doing?”
“How do you think they are doing? Their all worthless pieces of shit. They’ve been looking for that damn list for over a month now, and they’ve gotten nowhere. Jade glanced at the computer and it practically printed itself out.” I could hear the frustration in his voice, and took some satisfaction in it. At least I wasn’t the only one she was driving insane.
“Did you ask Jude to help you?”
He let out a chuckle. “You’ve met the man. Do you honestly think that he would help us do anything that might jeopardize his baby girl?”
The man had a point. I’ve seen Jude torture someone, and I can say that I never want to be on the receiving end of that punishment. “No, he wouldn’t help.”
“Way to state the obvious, boy. Now, here’s the address. Run on over and check out your new murder scene. The boys are having a field day with this one.”
He rattled off the location before ending the conversation. I ran my hand through my hair as I walked out of the building. I’ve never had to chase after a girl before in my life, not literally or metaphorically, and here Jade was causing me to do both. The girl was leaving a trail though, and I would follow her breadcrumbs until they brought me to her.
Hopping into my car, I took the thirty-minute drive in twenty minutes. Maybe if I kept following the bodies, I could get closer to finding out her location. I wasn’t sure if I would ever be able to turn her in, but talking to her was something I could definitely do.
I stepped out of my vehicle and grimaced with disgust. What kind of person would live like this? There was trash and abandoned cars littering the front lawn. The old rusted camper looked like it was about to collapse on itself any minute now. A large hole decorated the front door. My eyebrows scrunched together as I tried figuring out the function of that hole.
Shrugging my shoulders, I made my way towards the trailer. Before I could get to the door, someone busted through it. I watched as he ran towards the bushes before spewing all their lunch onto the leaf-filled branches. Newbie, I thought to myself while walking up the small metal stairs.
