His Next Victim
Chapter 4
Cain's POV
I ran towards the garage door, and found it locked. I banged on it, until finally Carter opened it with an annoyed expression on his face.
"What do you want?"
"See there is this little problem with a bomb,” I said becoming annoyed at his attitude.
His face quickly turned to one of surprise then worry.
"Where is Jade?"
"Sitting on a bomb."
He looks at me like I'm crazy, and then motions for me to go on. I walked quickly to where Jade was still sitting in her car. Her body was tense; she turned her head and notices Carter standing there. Finally, tears started streaming down her face, but I could tell they were tears of relief.
"Jade, baby. Your fine, I can get you out of this no problem."
He spoke with sure confidence that I even believed him. He looked over at me. "You know what a ratchet tie-down is?"
"Yeah, you use it in the back of your truck to hold down lumber or whatever."
"Okay, well I have one in the garage go get it. I'm going to go get a welding torch. I'll meet you right back here."
I ran back towards the garage, man, I was doing this a lot lately. Going into the place, I ran to where the cars where, assuming that the tools would be around there. I happened to be right, and looked everywhere I could for a stupid ratchet tie-down. I finally spotted one sitting in the top of his tool box.
Back outside, I saw Carter talking to Jade. She had a slight smile on her face, and her body was more relaxed than the last time I saw her. He reached his hand up, and stroked her cheek. The guy was a self-centered jerk that should get his hands off of her.
"Got it!" I screamed loudly and Carter jerked back. He had a slight blush on his face. Good Lord, the man was blushing. I bet Jade found that adorable.
"So you got it?" he asked.
"Yeah, now what are you going to do?"
"Just watch."
He took it from my hands, and kneeled down beside her. Reaching across her lap, he hooked the tie-down on one side of her seat. Then, he brought it behind her back.
"Okay, Jade. I'm going to scoot this under you okay? Don't move at all. It should slide right under you."
Carter slid the strap of the tie down underneath Jade. I could see her tense slightly before relaxing once again when it was in place. He hooked the other side of the tie-down on the other side of the seat.
"Now, I'm just going to tighten it. It's going to put more pressure on the seat. I'll put enough pressure on it to where it would seem like there is a person sitting on it, then you can get up."
He tightened the tie-down, and I could see the seat lowering because of the pressure he was putting on it. Finally, he stopped tightening it and looked up at Jade.
"You trust me?" he asked.
"With my life,” she said without hesitation.
He held out his hand, and she put hers hand in his. He quickly jerked her out the car. I flinched expecting something to happen, but nothing did. Damn, this guy was smart.
"Well, I don't really know anything about defusing a bomb, babe. So, I brought you this," he said holding up the welding torch. She grabbed it out of his hand and a proceeded towards her car. She dropped underneath it, and I stood there feeling useless.
Carter knew what to do to get her out, and Jade obviously knows how to defuse a bomb. Sure I can shoot a gun, throw a knife, and am good at hand to hand combat, but that's all I can do. Jade is an amazing woman, and I couldn't help but wonder why she didn't have a boyfriend, or if she liked Carter as more than a friend.
"Done,” I heard and looked over at Jade. She was wiping the dirt off of her pants as she held a small black object in her hand. She kept talking while waving that thing around in her palm. It was making me nervous as hell. She was holding a bomb like it was her hand-bag.
"Babe, I think you're making the N.S.A. agent nervous with that in your hand."
Her face turned confused and she looked down. Her mouth opened in a small 'O' before she looked at me and smirked. "Catch,” she said and tossed it towards me.
My natural reaction was to catch it. Freaking out, I did the first thing I could think of. I tossed it to Carter. His face turned to fright and he tossed it back to me. We stood there tossing it back and forth between each other, while Jade was laughing at us.
"Would you men please stop playing hot-potato? We have more important things to do then stand out here and play games. We need to find a guy."
Carter paused with the defused bomb still in his hands. "What's his name?"
"Nolan Siegfried."
"Ah, that guy is crazy. Don't know him personally, but I've heard stories about him."
"Yeah well come on. Jump in my car, you can help me. Wilde is driving my other one back."
They both started walking to her car. Before Carter reached the passenger door, he turned back to me and said, "Catch."
I looked down in my hands at the small black object, and then looked up at the tail lights of her car. How the hell did I wind up here? Carter drives off with the girl, while I stand her holding her bomb.
*****
I walked up to my dad and said, "Hey, dad. If mom sat down on a pressure sensitive bomb, how would you get her out alive?" He didn't even ask why I wanted to know, he just told me. Love him to death for always answering my random questions.
