His Next Victim
Chapter 22
Cain’s POV
Driving down the road, I could feel my heart constricting in my chest. What the hell was I doing? Was I really about to bring her in? What would they do to her? How would I be able to be with her if she was locked up in a jail cell?
“Cain!” Jade screamed from the backseat causing me to slam on the brakes. Everything flew forward including our bodies. For once, I was glad Jade was such a stickler when it came to wearing seatbelts.
“Damn it, Jade, are you trying to get us killed?” I yelled back.
Her eyes narrowed in the rearview mirror. “What? Should I have let you run over my father?”
“Your father?” I asked in confusion before turning my eyes towards the road.
What do you know? Jude was standing in the middle of the road with a large smile on his face. Looking over, I saw Jeff mirroring that smile. Something was up, and I wasn’t sure if I wanted to know what that something was.
“What’s going on?” I asked while turning my body to look at Jade.
She shrugged her shoulders. “I don’t know what he’s doing in the middle of the road, but I think he wants your attention.”
I turned back to see Jude waving a gun in the air. Once he realized he had my attention, he pointed it straight at me. As he walked towards us, I reached down to grab my own gun, but my hand connected with an empty holster.
“You should watch yourself in a car full of criminals,” Jeff said with amusement.
My eyes watched the familiar handgun he was holding. Leaning my head back into the seat, I let out a sigh. “Are you going to take her away?”
“I don’t know. Why don’t you roll down your window and find out.”
Rolling down my window, I winced as Jude pressed his gun to my temple. How had I got in this situation? Why didn’t I just keep driving?
“Listen up, boy,” Jude said with an Italian accent. “It’s time for you to swim with the fishes.”
“Dad,” Jade moaned from the back. “Please just get to the chase.”
Jude pushed his bottom lip out. “I always wanted to pretend to be a mob boss, and you go and ruin it.”
I kept my mouth shut the entire time. I wanted to talk, but the simple fact that he had a gun pointed at my head swayed my decision.
“I get it, I ruined it. Now, will you tell us what you’re doing?” Jade asked in frustration.
Jeff let out a laugh. “I told you we thought of everything.”
“What do you mean?” I asked finally gaining enough courage to open my mouth.
“Think about the only person who actually witnessed the murders,” Jude said through the window.
“Jeff?” I asked.
Jade let out a sigh from the back. “Think of someone that’s a little closer to you.”
I thought back to all the murders. The only people who knew were either dead or so close to her that they would lie with their hand on a bible.
“Jude wouldn’t say anything,” I told them with absolute conviction.
“It’s you, you idiot. You’re the one who witnessed it,” Jeff said before turning towards Jade. “Really? Tell me, why do you love this man?”
