His Next Victim
Chapter 21
Jade’s POV
“Are you sure this is the last one?” Cain whined.
I looked over at him in frustration. “Yes, this is the last person on the list, and then I’m done.”
“You’ll let me take you in?” he asked with hope on his face.
“Yeah, I’ll let you take me in,” I whispered and turned my gaze in a different direction.
What he wasn’t remembering was the fact that he could be used as a witness. The entire time I was doing the killings, I never gave them any solid evidence, and if there was any, it was quickly destroyed by some of my buddies in forensics. Cain was all the solid evidence they needed. He had watched as I killed those people, and his word held more weight than mine.
I pushed those thoughts to the back of my mind, and walked up the driveway. The house surprised me at first, but then I remembered everything else I had been through with this group of people. The yellow two story house was bordered with a white picket fence. The entire time I stared at it, I expected a fifty’s wife to come out holding a pie.
Luckily, nothing like that happened as we all walked up. This time, I had a gun strapped to my thigh. I was tired of making things more interesting for Jeff. Raising my arm up, I pressed the doorbell. An annoyingly happy sound emitted out and the unmistakable sound of high heels clicked on the floor inside the house.
I let out a groan. Please, not another cross dresser. The door opened inch by inch to reveal a woman. A real woman. We all stood there in surprise as we stared at her. Her brown hair was piled on top of her head in an artful do. Her pristine white dress went just below her knees, and her smile beamed at us.
“May I help you?” she asked in a polite voice.
“Is there a guy here?” Cain asked.
I sent him a sharp look. Last time he thought he should be talking to a guy, he got me. Right now, I was really hoping that this lady was the person I was supposed to kill. There is no way this Martha Stuart clone would want to get her hands dirty.
The woman let out a laugh and scanned Cain appreciatively. “No, I’m afraid I’m single.”
We all understood the underlining message she was sending out. I glared at the woman. Now, I really wanted to murder the skank.
“Can we come in?” I asked trying to keep the malice out of my voice.
I didn’t think it worked as her eyes widened and she backed out of my way. We all clambered inside. Looking around, I groaned in disgust. Who kept their house this clean? The thing was spotless. I could probably wear white, roll on the ground, and not get a speck of dust on me.
“OCD?” Jeff grumbled behind me.
I smiled at the woman. “So, you’re the one, huh?”
“What do you mean, dear?” she asked innocently.
“Jade, maybe we have the wrong person,” Cain said from beside me. I didn’t even turn to acknowledge that statement. It was her and I knew it. If it wasn’t her, then I was lost. She was the last person on my list. She had to be the one who killed Ales.
“Don’t play stupid with me. You know what I’m talking about. You killed Alex, didn’t you?”
She gave me a condescending smile. “You poor girl. Is that what all this killing has been for?”
“Why else would I do it?” I asked with a snarl.
“Maybe because you’re no different from us; you like the kill. Tell me, what are you going to do once you’re done with me? Go back to hacking computers?”
I just stared at the woman. I would be happy going back to my normal life. There was only one change that I wanted to make. I wanted Cain with me. The realization hit me at the wrong place and the wrong time, but I couldn’t think of a better way to spend my life.
“I will be happy,” I told the woman.
She tsked at me. “You just think you will. How about I make you a deal? You don’t kill me, and you can work with me.”
“And what is it that you do?” Cain asked her.
She gave him a smile. “Why I kill people, honey. What did you think I do?”
“Honestly?” he asked, “I though you baked cakes and gave them to the homeless.”
I reached out and high-fived him. See, great minds think alike. The lady looked between the two of us a smiled. Reaching down, she pulled the gun out from underneath her dress.
“Where did she keep it?” Jeff asked.
I turned and gave him a disgusted look. “She has a thigh holster, you idiot.”
“Ah, well I think she’s about to shoot you. You might want to dunk.”
I dropped to the ground just as a bullet whizzed by my head. I really didn’t feel like dealing with this lady. Pulling my gun out, I aimed for her knee-cap. It took me one shot for her to drop to the ground withering in pain. Standing, I made my way towards her.
I leveled the gun to her face. “Did you kill Alex?”
She shook her head. “That was all Nolan. He wanted the satisfaction of killing everyone you loved. He had big plans for you, Jade. He wanted you to work with him.”
I looked at the lady. “I know what he wanted. One more question, are you really the last one?”
“Why should I answer? You’re going to kill me no matter what.”
“True,” I said with a shrug, “but if you tell me, I won’t torture you. I’ll make your death quick. Believe me, I want to torture you. The way you looked at Cain annoyed me a lot.”
She looked at my face as if she was trying to see if I was being honest. She shouldn’t have to look very hard because I meant every word.
“Okay,” she said. “I am the last one. If there was anymore, I never knew of them.”
I nodded my head and pulled the trigger. If she was lying, then nothing I did would make her tell the truth.
Blood splattered in each direction, but I paid it no mind. Putting the gun back into its holster, I placed my hands in front of Cain.
“Take me in,” I told him with a tiny smile.
He hesitated momentarily before snapping the handcuffs on my wrists. He gave me a sad expression, but I just shrugged at him.
“Sorry to break up this chick fest,” Jeff said, “but aren’t her hands supposed to be behind her back?”
Cain turned and glared at Jeff. “It’s not like she’s going to try and get away. You should turn yourself in too.”
“For what?” Jeff asked with a smile.
Cain just shook his head in amusement. “Nothing, Jeff. Absolutely nothing. Are you coming with?”
Jeff nodded his head. “I wouldn’t miss it for the world. Plus, Jade might need an alibi. I was with her the entire time.”
I smiled at him. “You don’t have to lie for me.”
His face turned serious. “You’re not staying in jail, and you damn well know that. Whether it’s me getting you out or Jude, the simple fact is that you won’t be in there longer than a day.”
“How do you plan on doing that?” Cain asked.
Jeff gave him an evil smile. “Jude has his ways. Believe me, we’ve thought of everything.”
Getting into the car with the handcuffs on my wrists, I prayed that for once they really did think of everything.
