Misery could not open his eyes immediately. Pain gnawed at him like an amputated limb. His heart hurt as much as it beat fast. Something terrible had happened to his Partner. The bond was frayed...not broken but frayed.

- Gwen...GWEN!

He leapt to his feet, his transformation instantaneous. One moment he was human, the next he was Cerberus disappearing in a gigantic leap. He clung to the bond like a damned man as he ran so fast he looked like a shadow. In the back of his mind he felt his brother and sister following him as fast as they could. He arrived at the HQ in record time. As he passed through the doors, they creaked and blackened immediately. The heat he gave off was hellish and the air vibrated around him as he roared. A trail of fire followed him with every step he took. Misery saw the world differently. Everything was coloured shades. He looked for Gwen's gold in the crowd that had gathered in the hall. The doors to the rift room were open. Security was holding a young man filled with grey and brown smoke. The young man was screaming. The healers surrounded Gwen who began to sit up as the Cerberus arrived. The heat was so great that everyone turned to let the great Creature pass. Many had never seen one of the Cerberus in its original form. In addition to being huge and totally black, a few flames were flying around them. The heat released was lethal and the air emptied of its moisture in clouds of steam. Everything that came into contact with it burned: the floor, the walls, the objects... but everything stopped when Misery saw Gwen get up between two doctors. He regained his human form and pushed the practitioners aside to take him in his arms. He breathed in his scent behind his ear, his arms wrapped around Gwen's body. Gwen moaned pathetically and the arms around him tightened. Yet Misery tensed. It was quick and unnoticed except by Griffin. Griffin, who clung to Misery as if he were his lifeline. Murmur was there. Arms crossed and nervous, he motioned for Johann to be taken into custody. The doctors wanted to take Gwen to the infirmary but Misery growled at them threateningly. Agony and Tragedy arrived. Agony smiled.

- No one's going to take him away from you, you idiot.

He turned to Murmur.

- What happened?

Murmur squinted his yellow eyes.

- I don't know yet. Johan and Gwen were in the Rift Room and something happened that knocked Gwen down.

Tragedy clenched his jaw.

- Was no one there to watch the door? Why was Gwen alone with Johan on the other side? What did he do to him? And I thought you'd taken care of Johan... what was he doing here?

Murmur's forehead was covered with a light layer of perspiration. He pushed up his glasses, which had slipped down his nose.

- I'll get to the bottom of this.

Agony growled.

- I hope so!

Misery didn't care what was said. He took Gwen in his arms and carried him away from the people to a place where he could protect her. He left it to his brother and sister to manage. He knew they would join him later but for now he needed to be with Gwen.

Once behind the walls of Gwen's flat, he laid his burden on the sofa. Gwen curled up. Misery knelt down and took his hands. He squeezed them.

- Tell me what happened, Griffin.

Griffin froze, opening his eyes wide with fear, then closed them and took a deep breath. He pursed his lips.

- You know it's me?

Misery smiled quickly but her smile didn't reach his eyes.

- I know you're you, from the lab. How could I not know?
