Zebian had been pacing around the room like a madman. He had been like this for eight hours. Anxiety was vesting in every pore of his being. No royal servants had seen the king bearing an emotional breakdown ever except for Lucian. His heart was warning him of seizures every time he watched her having them. She was jerking frenziedly. Her body was too weak to shake this badly, only if he could take her pain. It was killing him more than she was suffering.

It had been many hours and many seizures she have had since the moment he had taken her back to this heavily-guarded villa. The physicians were on their toes all the while. They were giving their all to save both; the mother and the baby, but the case was turning hopeless. The little one's life was at stake from the second the arrow pierced her as the arrowhead was coated with poison. And the mother, she also had fewer chances of survival as well.

Doctors were keeping the majesty briefed. Every time they told him the severity of the case, he felt like killing himself before she gave her last breath. He didn't have the bone to see her closing eyes on him again, he couldn't see her walking away forever and irrefutably, he didn't have the heart to have her say goodbye even before the beginning of their forever.

"Hold her tight," One of the lady physicians screamed as they tackled the calamity. There were pipes shoved inside the wound to suck the poison, the fungal substance was filling those pipes, it was dark in colour that told him the poison had been mixed in her blood. He agonisingly stared at the pipe while tears washed down without his permission.

It took her minutes to calm down. Beads of cold sweat were coating her whole body. "Alright, it's over, fetch me the remedy," The lady physician asked the herbalist. That's when his consuming thoughts came at halt only to take him back to their past. To their first-ever interaction.

My mother was a herbalist and a healer, she taught me some tricks. I can really help you

A broken smile cracked on his smile before he could know. The herbalist brought the medicine and the physician injected the fluid into her veins. Slowly but surely, her body stopped quivering. His eyes stayed glued to her white as sheet lips, then on her pale complexion and shrinking collarbone. Why did she look like she was telling him goodbye, why hadn't she listened when he begged her to keep her eyes open when he was taking her here? Why didn't she want to stay?

Warm and heart-wrenching tears slipped down his eyes. He kept staring at her soul leaving her body with blurred vision.

Despite all his power and potential, he could do nothing about it.

This was how defeat was scorching his insides. The taste of pain was burning him slowly. The shallowness that the thought of an end coming before the beginning gulped him in whole.

He really failed as a lover, as a protector.

Two Weeks Later

"Mommy is still angry with me, she doesn't talk to me. Will you talk to me?"

"Uh-hmm? What does she say?"

"Really? Does she miss me?" A soft chuckle suffused the air.

"Tell her I miss her more than she could ever know,"

"May you ask her if she opens her eyes? I promise, I will be a good boy to her, we will play many games together," His tone was softer than a feather, holding so much meaning and fullness in each word. And when he placed a kiss on the stomach, she felt a bolt of adrenaline rush fuelling her veins.

Renai heard the conversation with eyes shut. She had been trying to guess if it was heaven or hell that could feel this peaceful. Though, every inch of her body was sore and asked her to move to check if her body parts were even in one piece. With huge difficulty, she could quirk her brows for a bolting second, but it didn't go unnoticed by the king who was holding her cold hand and staring at her stoned face.
