Neteyam sat at the kitchen table watching silently how Lo'ak and Ao'nung whispered to each other in the leaving room, truly believing they were being discreet. He frowned giving a look to his mother sitting a couple of chairs away, but she only shrugged with a confused smile.
It was late, outside was already completely dark but even if he felt tired, he was too curious to know what was going on to go to sleep, so he cleared his throat, however, his attempts to grab their attention were unsuccessful.
"Is there anything you would like to share with the rest of us?" Neteyam cleared his throat almost making them jump.
"Nothing. Nothing at all, what makes you say that?" Ao'nung turned to look at him from the sofa. He kept his arms crossed and lips pursed, so it wasn't difficult for Neteyam to see through his lie.
"Loak." He sighed waiting for his brother to say something, but he was strangely quiet. "Alright, what is it? You two have been strangely secretive in the past days, don't think we haven't noticed."
"...Deliriums." Lo'ak snapped his fingers as if a sudden realization washed over him. "That must be it, is your fever back again? Why don't you go lay down?"
"Do not patronize me." He spoke through gritted teeth. "I know something has happened, or is happening, and you two are going to tell me what is it."
"Should we be worried?" Neytiri left her cup of tea raising an eyebrow to her youngest son.
"No!" Lo'ak stood up crossing his arms and giving a glance at Ao'nung.
"Stop doing that and tell me what is going on with Kiri." His words seemed to leave them puzzled. "I know something is wrong because I have not heard a word from her in the past two weeks, and let's not forget that you didn't spend even half of the week you were supposed to at the debutant."
"We told you already, Kiri was sick." Lo'ak shrugged.
"Of what?"
"Her stomach." He insisted, growing nervous by the minute.
"He told me it was a headache." Neteyam pointed at Ao'nung.
"You are such an idiot." The taller man sighed as he covered his eyes already stressed.
"I wanted to believe you; I really did. I didn't ask questions even if I found it strange but is only natural to be worried when there are so many things not making sense and the two of you keep murmuring to each other, thinking you are as discreet as a couple of little girls whispering in the back of the class."
"What is your brother talking about?" Neytiri stood up, unable to keep herself calm. She had been so busy that she had decided to trust Lo'ak's words with no further questions, but now she realized her mistake.
"We..." Lo'ak stumbled on his words.
"It had been two weeks of unsuccessful results; I think we have been pushing our luck enough." Ao'nung looked at him leaving the decision up to him.
In the past days, he had done as much as he could on his request, but absolutely no one in town seemed to know anything about Miles despite the rumors of him going around enjoying his time drinking and throwing his money away in brothels.
"Push your luck about what?" Neteyam's tone began to lose his calmness.
"It's about Kiri."
"I already know that." His breath felt heavy as he tried not to lose his temper with his brother.
"And...something is happening. I didn't want to tell you because we had it under control."
"If you truly did this conversation wouldn't be happening."
