Suddenly the whole day got quieter, the sky got clearer, the air got fresher, everyone got way calmer. I felt a sense of security around me as I was holding y/n's hand watching how the kids were packing their things to go along with Toji, Suguru and the rest.Me and the Queen already spoke about what we want to do next after putting Naoya in jail for awhile. Unfortunately we really don't have anything against him to put him in jail permanently, but I'm working on it. As long as we have the time to stop the war, we might be alright till then.
"So what now? What are we doing?", y/n turns to me with a cheerful smile on her face. I was still in euphoria after her surprising announcement, but I somehow managed to put myself together.
"We? We are not doing anything, because you and my child are going to the camp with Suguru and the rest", I explained to her, "you can't stay here alone while pregnant".
"What? Why not? I'll be alright. Plus, I can help you now that my father is gone".
"Abso-fucking-lutely no! I won't allow it".
Y/n let go off my arm and crossed hers locking them together in front of her chest. She started pounding and rolling her eyes at me. I knew she didn't like my decision, and trust me I didn't like it either, but it's for her own good.
I placed my hands on her cheeks and I forced her to look at me. She was still making that pounding face that I hate seeing of her beautiful face. I gave her a smile.
"You know that I wanna be around you all the time, I want to help you", I began explaining to her, "but it's different now. It's not about you, or me. It's about our child. Do you want to put him or her in danger?", I asked her.
"No", she said straight away.
"Then please go with Suguru and the rest, there you two will be safe and I'll come to get you as soon as we end the war. I promise you".
"It might take months, Satoru...".
"I'll make sure you won't go through the pain on your own...and I'll make sure to be there by the time my child decides to see the world for the first time".
Y/n hugged me tightly burying her face into my chest. I wrapped my hands around her and to be completely honest I didn't want to let go off her. I didn't want to say goodbye, I wanted to go to bed with her tonight, to hold her and wait for my baby to show up. But..it was for the best and I had to accept it.
"Write me everyday, okay?", she finally let go.
"Okay", I nodded my head.
I stood there at the gates along side the Queen, who was the only left staying with me. All the kids and y/n were waving at us as the carriage was moving. I stood there watching and waved back at the girl I loved, the children I saved and my mates. The Queen kept her head high and didn't say anything until they left.
"You know this will be a hard journey for you, right?", she asked me once we were alone.
"I'm aware, your majesty", I said and I put my hands in my pockets, "I shouldn't have promised to return alive to her".
"You are right", the Queen turns to walk back inside the palace, "if you think fighting my son was the hard part, then you know nothing. Stopping this war after years and years of pain, suffering and death will not be easy".
"What are you saying, my Queen?", I stare at her waiting for her to drop the bomb at me.
"Tell me, Satoru, what happens, when you feed wolves with meet everyday?", she asked me.
"They don't die?".
"No. They get used to it. They start to obey you in order to get the food. And do you know what happens, when you try to take away the only thing they know and expect?".
"They die".
"They don't know what to do, they don't know how to react and then they die, because most of you, who grew up during the war, don't know anything besides fighting. What will happen with all those not educated, poor kids, who can't work and can't go to school?".
I stood silent for a moment.
"We have a lot to think about, because we can't put an end to the war, if we don't have a solution for the people's misery. Everyone should have a place in society and we have to rethink every decision twice", she explained.
Both of us walk side by side as the local police was escorting the guards we fought to put them in jail too. The Queen looked way serious now than ever before. Maybe, because we have a big responsibility on our shoulders, or maybe now I was about to see her true face.
"What are you suggesting?", I spoke to her.
"We should make education free", the Queen suggested first and I nodded, "if we give all those kids a chance to a better future, maybe we'll finally have enough workers, engineers and teachers. If the education is free, the percent of useless people will get low".
"You're calling uneducated kids 'useless'? That's a little too harsh".
"But isn't that what they are?", she suddenly stops and turns to look at me, "think about it, Satoru. Kids, who have no education now are sent to the army, but if we stop the war..there will be no army, why would we need it? And what will happen with all those kids, who can't read, can't write and can't do math?".
"I don't know..they can do something, they can work...clean the farms, do something...".
"Okay. Maybe 10 kids can take care of our farms, but what about the rest of them? 80% of the children in our country are uneducated and there's not that much work they can do, if they don't know how to read or write. Soon after the war is over all those kids will be on the streets with no jobs, no money and nothing to do, but live out of people's generosity. We don't need this in our new world, right?".
"Right...".
"Then that's why we are making education free for everyone!", she smiled, "next I suggest you social subsidies for pregnant women and women, who lost their husbands during the war. Children should be fed".
"I agree on that, but I want men, who got seriously injured during the war, or lost a body part because of the war, to also get money every month for the rest of their lives".
"Sounds fair. What more?".
"Making peace with the North..".
Both me and the Queen stopped in our tracks, she looked at me unsure what she should say next. I took a deep breath and lowered my head.
"Are you sure you want to return to the North and face your past, Satoru?", she asked me.
"Yes, yes I am", I said straight away, "this is the first and the biggest step we can make for the better future. I gotta do it for my country".
"Okay then...", the Queen smiled, "if that is your wish, then we are going to do it".
