Three minutes or so into the drive, Dave decided to turn on the radio. The sound was faint and very soft which was appropriate, considering that he had a concussed girl next to him. He kept glancing at her every now and again: she was looking out the window with a drowsy smile on her face.
"Dave?"
"Yeah?"
"Has no one ever noticed that this van smells like sweat and weed?" Alahna asked, wearing an amused smirk on her face.
"Ah yes, that's actually what our new fragrance is going to smell like." He jokingly replied, making Alahna laugh as she covered her face in mild disgust at the mere suggestion, even if it was for satire. "We'd call it Teen Spirit but that name's already taken, so." He shrugged as if to say oh well.
"Yeah, that's a real shame, that is." Alahna sighed. "For what it's worth, I think that real teen spirit smells a lot more like whatever the fuck is going on in here."
"Well, consider it a preview of the real thing. Our people keep telling us it'll be a hit." Alahna broke into a fit of giggles that made Dave want to reach inside his throat, find his heart, pull it out and give it to her to keep. She let her head rest against the window as her eyes found the Seattle scenery yet again. "Does it hurt too bad?" Dave asked her.
"It could be worse, I suppose." She shrugged. "I'm mostly just quite tired." Dave nodded. "Hey, uh... I didn't get to thank you for earlier. You were very lovely and it really meant a lot to me."
"Anytime, Bump." He replied, reaching out to rub her thigh. Alahna's cheeks started to burn (she had already lost count of how many times that had happened over the course of the night). Dave's hand lingered over her leg for a moment before eventually pulling away. "Hands on the wheel, Dave." He murmured to himself in a pretty flawed impression of Bonnie's strong Liverpool accent.
Alahna would've been perfectly fine with Dave's hand staying on her leg. Come to think of it, she reckoned she'd be perfectly fine with a lot of other things she couldn't admit to herself just yet.
"So," Dave sighed after taking a large puff of air. "You fled the country of your ancestors, huh?" He commented.
Alahna snorted. "Indeed I did." She replied. "I guess I was having a little trouble figuring out what to do with the rest of my life. And my parents are alright, you know, they love me and everything but they've coddled me too much over the years. It's not like I did much to stop them anyway." Alahna stared down at her lap. "I don't think I would've gotten anywhere looking over my shoulder just to make sure they approved of my every choice. So yeah, Bonnie and I both had enough money saved up to get by for a couple months while we got settled down... and now we're here."
