Just like that, the brutal Amazon lobbed the Queen over her shoulder. She'd done it all so easily. She didn't stop to look at the damage. She didn't pause to bask in her win.
Fallon gave another day another dollar a whole new meaning.
What do I do?
Seth could never be so collected.
This wasn't momentous for her. This was normal. Just another box ticked off her list.
She was the immortal that rebels prayed to. The Goddess of the people. And fuck, she had him at her feet in worship. He'd never seen anything like her and doubted he ever would again.
Fallon was in a league of her own.
He'd seen with his own eyes how much the power of a royal was to adjust to. She'd been powerful before—but now something new roiled through her. Something small minds could only ever dream of. Yet this woman didn't spare it a second thought.
With Marina over her shoulder, she strolled through the water, past the wreckage of the gates and onto the wet beach.
He followed after her less smoothly, his shirt clinging to his skin. He kept his eyes on her, always her, awaiting her verdict.
The aftermath was too normal. Seagulls were chirping. Waves were still crashing against the shore. But demons were cheering. And laughing.
Celebrating. They were celebrating.
Fallon listened.
The Goddess of the people.
My ruler.
His everything rested in her hands.
When they spotted Fallon, those cheers doubled in volume. These people adored her. She was their hero. Their saviour. They didn't care for the Queen dangling from her shoulder. They didn't need to rub it in. This wasn't about a triumph over the Queen. This was about the victory for the people.
Did they even know the woman over Fallon's shoulder was their Queen?
Had they seen her enough to recognise her?
He followed as she made her way towards a grinning Rudy and Duncan.
Duncan threw a long, curious glance to the blonde slung over Fallon's shoulder before speaking.
"It worked."
Fallon returned the blonde demon's smile. "That it did. You both did good. I'm proud of you."
"Thanks boss," Duncan returned as Seth fumed silently at her side. "We couldn't have done this without you."
"Well now you get to have a good night's rest." Brimming in her eyes was real, genuine pride. Fallon had built a genuine care for these people. And now she'd leave them to it. "No early morning starts to train with Fallon. No worrying about harmful rulers."
She was back to joking with the demons now. Ha! She couldn't even bring herself to look at Seth.
Skittishly, the blonde demon kicked his feet through the sand. "Actually, I think I'll stick to those early morning starts."
"You sure?"
"I'm better for it," Duncan answered. "The feeling I've gotten from doing good is—I can't go back to being who I was before. I'm better like this. I want to be this person forever."
Fallon nodded understandingly. "Good for you."
She'd been right. Fallon was always right. Duncan wasn't the same person he'd been when Annaliese had come to Runealm. He'd grown even more since Fallon had come into his life.
