Anver, a college student having to do a case study as a final requirement in school, went to the table where Jine and Jarie talked just a couple of minutes ago. Jarie was still there, and Anver sat across her. Jarie was helping him with his school project not that she was knowledgeable on the topic assigned to Anver for his case study but that her best friend, Jine, was the perfect person to do a case study on with the kind of topic assigned to Anver.
"Hi, Jarie. I was watching from a distance while you were arguing with Jine; I hope you don't –" Anver was not able to finish what he was about to say when Jarie almost jump from her seat when she saw Anver. She was doing her best for everyone especially Jine not to see even a glimpse of Anver. Though some passer-by's would see Anver, they would not give him a second or closer look. Nobody except Jarie knew how Anver looked.
Jarie almost dragged Anver from where he was sitting to the back of a big tree with a huge trunk, so nobody would see them.
"Jarie, sorry for bothering you this much, but Miss Friena already gave the class the deadline for our case studies. Could you still tell me more about Jine aside from the one you told me before about his ex-boyfriend?"
Jarie relaxed her back by leaning on the trunk and gave a gentle sigh before she answered, "Si Jine, she had a difficult childhood. She was so sickly when she was younger. Because of her poor health, she was given so much attention by her parents. Kaya rin nakuha niyang gumaling from her illness."
"Ano'ng sakit niya?" Anver was facing Jarie so that if anyone would look where they were, s/he would only see his back.
"Epileptic siya when she was a kid. Kahit bata parin ako noon, alam ko na that was the hardest part of her childhood. But thanks to her parents who really took care of her, nalampasan niya 'yon. How I wish nandito mga parents niya ngayong nahihirapan siya. Both her parents kase nasa abroad na taking care of their businesses there."
"Thanks for telling me all of these," his voice was softer than ever. "It must have been hard on you because she's your best friend."
"Okay lang, gusto ko rin kasi siyang matulungan sa pinagdadaanan niya ngayon. Have you already found time to do your observations?"
"Do you think okay lang na hindi niya alam na I'll observe her?"
"Kung alam niya, she won't like it. Ayaw niya ngang pumunta sa professor mong si Aunt Friena para magpa-counsel. Well anyway, we'll tell her in time. But for now, sundan mo na siya. She's on her way na pauwi. I don't know where she lives now, kaya magmadali ka na. Baka hindi mo siya maabutan."
"Okay sige, I'll go ahead. Thanks again,"
Anver went on his way as fast as he could, but he did not forget to cover up with his cap and shades while he was on his way until he could already see Jine walking on the sidewalk. She appeared weird to him because she looked as if she could not see anything surrounding her. She did not even notice a piece of paper fell from her delicate hand. Anver took that paper and read it.
Before I Let You Go
I want to lie with you there where nobody else knows.
Let's share a stare at the daylight and its fading glow
And indulge with the evening glare as long as it shows.
Assure me you won't sleep until my eyes fall to a close.
Walk beside me to make endless a journey back home.
See me lovelier when my hair by the wind is blown.
Say the words that I'll still hear when older we've grown.
Hold my hand like you will never leave me alone.
Wake me up in the morning with your kiss and embrace.
Smile at me like you'll do that for the rest of our days.
Let us share my bed like there could be no other place
To have breakfast you prepared. How sweet are your ways.
Take me to a river that is only known by a few.
Let us enjoy the water in its ever altering hue.
Calm my within whatever I'm going through.
Because though you're here, I'm missing you.
Points for Analysis/Reflection
1. How do you think will Anver be a significant character in the story?
2. If you were to add anything on Jine's 'Before I Let You Go' list, what would it be?
