Patience didn't always come easy to me. Neither did love, trust, calculus, and a lot of other things. But as far as my patience went, I was doing a well enough job concealing my boredom.

My arms were crossed under the table, my fingers tapping impulsively; cloaked by the dark wood that divided my mother and I.

"There's something important I have to tell you," she had told me, assuring me it'd be a wonderful surprise.

I'd be the judge of that.

"So?" I prompted. There was a thin line between sitting at the dinner table waiting for my mom to finish building up a fifty page essay to get to her point and... insanity. I was crossing it, because often times all the 'important' things she had to tell me were utterly useless.

A well-suppressed smirk painted the corners of her lips, though not well enough for me to ignore, apparently. It established a sense of impending doom in my stomach that outweighed my... nah, it still didn't outweigh my boredom.

"I have decided," she began slowly yet triumphantly (triggering my short attention span that could only be obtained by going insane watching Instagram reels 4 hours a day).

"—to get a new Porsche, and you want me to decide what color: lilac or lavender?" I finished. My tone was flat yet expectant because goddamn, you wouldn't believe how many times she'd asked me the same thing over and over again.

"No, I already decided on lavender," she answered dismissively. "I decided to transfer you."

My eyebrows furrowed as I tried to make sense of her words. No wayyy, was it actually something impactful?

"Transfer me?" I repeated.

"Yes." She looked much too proud of herself.

"Like, like transfer me to a different... mansion?"

"What's wrong with this one?" I could tell by this genuinely offended reaction that it wasn't the case, but it was still funny.

"Okay," I said, deadpan, "so if I'm not transferring houses then I'm transferring schools."

Her entire expression morphed into a wide smile in a second, like a cartoon character. Haha. "Bingo!"

Hawait, I was being sarcastic. A flicker of panic arose in my throat. Transferring schools? Had she taken her meds lately?? There was absolutely nothing wrong with my school! I had friends. I had good grades. I hadn't done anything wrong in the last week!

"What?" I demanded.

"Don't worry," she scoffed, pushing me away with a hand flick, as if it was no big deal. "You'll love it there."

"But... why?!" I sputtered. Boredom and impatience were no longer on my radar. In a single word, my mother had wiped my brain clear and left me at a loss for words. I was, you could say, speechless. Gagged. Flabbergasted.

"Well, you see, I heard about how delightful it is there—"

"Where is 'there?!'"

"KISS, of course! It's a high school, obviously.  And I would really appreciate if you lowered your voice—"

"You've got to be kidding me. The school's name is KISS?"  My voice only grew until I was yelling, running my fingers through my hair in disbelief. "I've never even heard of it before! Where even is it?"

She glanced at me guiltily.

I met her eyes.

"Oh, no," I said, realizing the answer a second before she spoke. I had heard of KISS before. "Aw heeel nah—"
