Hotch's POV
It was bring your kid to work day. Not specifically at the BAU, but at the school that Hotch's son, Jack, attended. Jack had been excited for months about coming to the BAU, and Hotch hoped every day that when the day came that they were in Quantico and not somewhere else on a case. Now, the day of, he prayed that they wouldn't get a call saying they had to go solve a case. Jack always stated his desire to go on a case with his dad, wanting to see how much of a hero he was. There was no way that it would happen, though. If they got a call Jack would stay with Garcia the rest of the day until Jack's aunt would come pick him up, but the ideal would be spending the whole day in Quantico.
Even though they were at the BAU, everyone still had a lot of work to do, including Hotch. He was sure to show his son around the building, and introduced him to some people, but after that all there was left was to show him paperwork, which was very boring. It didn't take long for Jack to wander off which was fine with Hotch, as he knew his son wouldn't get in trouble and would be respectful to his coworkers.
Between reading and signing papers, he would look up to give his eyes a break as well as to look out his office windows to see if he could spot Jack. He glanced around to see him at (y/n)'s desk, talking to her. He watched as she folded a piece of paper until it became a paper airplane. She then held a finger to her lips with one hand, and pointed at Reid—who was looking in the opposite direction, with the hand holding the airplane. Hotch knew exactly what mischievous smile Jack had—even though he could not see it—as he grabbed the plane from (y/n)'s hand. He threw it and it smacked into the back of Reid's head, which caused him to jump and turn around.
He smiled and watched the two of them high five before turning to Reid. They exchanged a few words and laughed once more. It made Hotch happy to see his coworkers and his son getting along.
He turned back to the paper on his desk and continued to read it. A few minutes later, he decided that he wanted both a break and to see Jack, so he got up from his desk. When he excited the office, Jack had just been about to enter the room, so they almost ran into one another.
"Woah, Bud," Hotch said. He kneeled down so he would be closer to Jack's height. "How's it going?"
"Good!" Jack said. "It's fun here. Garcia showed me the secret snack cubboard."
Hotch raised a brow. "Secret snack cubboard? I didn't know we had one of those."
"That's because it's a secret."
Hotch chuckled. "I suppose that makes sense."
Jack nodded. "And everyone is really nice, especially the girl I was just talking to. I don't remember her name because she's new but she's really nice."
"You must be talking about (y/n)."
Jack nodded again. "Yeah. Do you think she's nice, daddy?"
"Yeah, I think she's really nice."
"She kinda reminds me of mommy."
Hotch inhaled sharply. He talked about Haley and what happened to her with his son quite often. A year later, they were both starting to come to terms with it and adjust to their life as it is now. Hotch did not ever anticipate this, though. It caught him by surprise and he had a tough time finding the words to say.
He looked over at (y/n) and realized that she indeed looked very similar to Hailey in some ways. The two of them could have sisters, or maybe cousins with their similar looks.
It was more so the way that they acted, though, that made them similar. They had a similar sense of humor, as well as the same caring heart. (Y/n) also seemed to click with Jack, making friends with him even though they had just met a few minutes ago.
The most similarity, though, laid in the way (y/n) made Hotch feel. From the moment that he met her, he realized that she had a very similar presence to Haley's, at least in the ways that he enjoyed most; The conversation flowed. He felt comfort with her. He was falling for her.
He didn't realize it until this moment, but he was. Maybe his subconscious realized sooner than he did, because he had been avoiding her when he could since they met—avoiding her because he felt like he was betraying Haley somehow. He wasn't sure when he would feel ready to start talking to another woman romantically, or if he ever would feel ready.
He realized that he had still been staring at (y/n) once she looked up at Hotch, catching his gaze. She smiled brightly before going back to her work.
He didn't realize that he had tears in his eyes until they threatened to fall. With another quick inhale of breath, he steadied himself, stopping the tears from forming any further.
He looked back to his son. "Yes, she kinda reminds me of her too."
