The spring is quiet, silent in nervous anticipation. They all know the risks, everything that could go wrong.

But it doesn't matter, because they all would rather die fighting, then waiting for imminent death.

A bag is prepared, with extra weapons, the controller, supplies. The crowd is gathered by the maze doors, preparing for the horrors that lie within.

"You all know the risks, and we're all here."

The girls are silent, look at the trio of leaders. Harriet, Izzy, and Sonya.

"This may very well be the last time we are together. If it is, I want everyone to know, that you are my family."

They know it's time to go. Harriet heads to the pit to release Beth, so she can make her decision. They wait expectantly for her to say something.

"I'm staying."

"Beth, are you sure?"

Beth nods. Ximena rushes over, and wraps her arms around Beth.

"I'll miss you."

"I'll miss you too."

They all take one last look at each other, a silent understanding between them, before disappearing out of sight, and into the maze.

The maze is dim, only lit by the artificial skies. The snow is still there, and every girl has been given skates, taught lessons ever since they knew they would get out of this place.

They slide quietly, trying to be careful of how much noise they make, because no one wants to attract unwanted attention from the winged creatures of the maze, especially since they killed a few of them.

"Everyone, this way!"

The group collectively follows, trusting their leaders to guide them, unafraid of the consequences.

Wren is in charge of the bag, being the most reliable, and having the strongest grip. Ximena wishes Beth would've come with them, but she knows that Beth is the most stubborn person she knows, aside from Izzy.

"Keep it up, we're almost there!"

Then, the worst thing that could possibly happen, happens. The unmistakable screech of a shade, approaching makes a few freeze in their tracks. They knew the risks, they knew they could die, so they keep going.
