Had I known what my future would become, I would have said no.
At age 17, I had everything I needed, an apartment I adored, a stable part-time job, and freedom. How freedom felt good. Away from my parents, childhood, and rules. What else did I need?
"Ms. Roni. Ms. Roni!" A voice called my name.
I came back to reality and looked down to see a young boy, Charles, tugging on my shirt.
"Yes, Charles?" I bent down to become at eye level with him.
"I need to use the loo." I chuckled.
"You could have gone yourself, you know where it is."
"Oh yeah." He ran down the hall and into the loo.
---
I unlocked the door to my apartment and placed my keys into the bowl. Silence. Nothing that needed my attention. I opened the hall closet and shrugged off my coat; hanging it up and closing the door.
I went into the kitchen and made myself a salad. After being around three-year-olds for 5 hours and cleaning up after them, I was exhausted. Who knew kids could get so hyper after having only one lolly?
Sitting at the table I pulled out my phone and scrolled through Instagram. Nothing special was happening in the world right now. Besides the obvious, my parents were spoiling my little two-year-old niece with everything she could imagine. That's why I moved away from Manchester to Leicester.
Three years earlier
"Arline! Dinner!" Mum called from the dining room.
"Coming!" I called back.
As I was walking down the hall, my phone rang. I looked to see it was an unknown number. I answered.
"Hello?" I asked.
"Arline! Thank goodness you answered."
"Maddie? Where in the bloody world are you? Mum and Dad have been waiting for you and Will. I tried calling your cell, but you didn't answer."
"Did you realize that I'm not calling from my cell?"
I did.
"What happened?"
No response.
"Maddie, why are you not on your cell? What happened?"
"I'm not coming back."
"What do you mean you're not coming back?"
"I'm going to stay with Will."
"Why would you-"
"Arline."
By this point I had her on speaker; phone on the table, and my parents could hear anything, but didn't say anything. My parents were never fond of Maddie dating Will, so they fought. A lot.
"Tell me, Maddie."
"I- I'm pregnant."
Silence.
---
I had to get away from all of that. My parents then fought with Maddie. With Maddie only being 19, my parents flipped. No communication, no visits or anything. I was practically banned from seeing my sister. Me, being 15 at the time, that broke me. She was my inspiration, my leader, my everything.
