It was November first, and I was getting ready to visit my parents. I had the day off of work, my parents wanted to see me, and Wes wasn't getting back from work until the third, so it all worked out.
I rode the train to Manchester and walked the short way to my childhood home. Walking up the front steps, flashes of memories came back to me, learning to ride my bike, playing with Maddie, jumping in puddles, and whatever else I would do.
Before I could knock on the door, it opened and I looked down and saw Genevieve looking at me.
Genevieve, being two, my mother was right behind her.
"Arline. Hi. Come in." My mother said, picking up Eve.
"Hi mum. Hi Eve." I said, taking off my shoes.
My mum closed the door and carried Eve to the living room so she could play with all of her toys. "Let's talk." She patted the seat next to her on the couch.
"About what?" I asked, sitting down. When mum wanted to talk, there was no getting out of it.
"You." Was all she said, but her face said more.
"Well, what do you want to know mum?"
"How's living on your own going?"
"Good."
"Are you making enough money to pay rent?"
"Yes mum. I got promoted when I turned 18, almost three months ago."
"Do you like it there, in Leicester I mean?"
"It's nice mum."
"Have you made any friends?"
I scoffed. "I'm not nine mum!"
"I just want to make sure you're getting out. That's all."
"I have Juniper."
"And when was the last time you talked to her?"
I froze. She lived just down the street from here, but I haven't talked to her since I moved out. I did try to stay close with her, but her being in Manchester and me being in Leicester, it was hard. Over time, I guess we just lost contact. "It's been a while." I admitted.
"Did you know she moved?"
"I guess it's been a lot longer than I thought. Where'd she move to?"
"California."
"Wait. She moved to the US? When?"
"Arline. It's been almost six months. She moved in May to do summer classes. She's in college now. Like you should be." My mother nudged my shoulder.
"Mum. I've told you before, I'm not interested in going to college. I've got a good job that I'm happy with. I'm good."
"I still think-"
"Where's dad?" I asked, cutting her off before she could continue.
"There was an emergency at work, so he had to go take care of it. He did tell me to say hi from him." I nodded.
"Sounds just like dad." I thought. Every time I came to visit, he usually either was gone before I got there, or left right after I arrived.
"Doggy." Eve said, holding up a dog stuffed toy.
"Very good job Princess. You're right, that is a doggy."
Mum turned back to me, a sly smile creeping on her face. "So." She paused. Probably for dramatic effect. "any boys in your life? Are you dating anyone?"
