I turned to face the door, to lock it, when someone bumped into me. Bumping into me hard. I fell to the ground and dropped my keys.
"Oww." I said, rubbing my arm where I was bumped.
"I am so sorry ma'am, are you alright?" A smooth voice asked from above me.
I looked up to see a man. A very attractive man. He had a strong face, with curly light brown hair, blue eyes, and a warm smile. My heart started beating faster. "Yeah, I'm fine. I wasn't watching where I was going. Are you alright?" I asked, looking for my dropped keys.
"Here, let me help." He reached his hand down and offered it to me. I took his hand and he helped me up. I found my keys, picked them up, and then turned to the man.
"Do you live here? I haven't seen you around here before. I'm Arline."
"I'm Wes," He said. He had a thick accent. It was smooth, it made me want to hear more, "do you by chance sing?"
"No. I can't."
"Well Arline, who doesn't sing, we've never met before, but it feels like I've met you before because our showers are on opposite sides of the same wall, so sometimes when we're showering at the same time, we sing duets."
"That's a bit weird."
"What I'm trying to say is that I can hear you sing, and you sound really good, so I sing along with you."
"That's still weird."
"Saying it out loud, yeah it does sound weird." Wes agreed.
"You're not here that often, are you?" I asked.
"No. I'm away often for- for work." He said, nodding his head.
"That checks out." I thought, walking towards the elevator.
Wes followed, "Where are you heading?"
I pressed the call button and turned to Wes, "To the bread bakery."
"Which one?"
"The Bread Shoppe."
"How about I make it up to you, Arline? I'll buy you what you want and we'll sit and chat for a bit." He proposed.
"You don't have to do that."
"Please?" He asked. The way he said please made my heart flutter. There was no way I could turn his offer down now.
I sighed, "Fine."
The elevator doors opened and I walked in, followed by Wes. He pressed "G" for the ground floor and we were off. Going down seven stories, stopping at each one; it took a while. The two of us stood there in silence for the entire ride down.
The doors opened on the ground floor and we walked out, walking past the front desk.
"Have a lovely outing Ms. Roni." Carol, the desk lady smiled.
"Thanks, Carol." I said, waving my hand goodbye.
Wes held the door open for me and that simple gesture made a bit of color rush to my cheeks.
"Thanks." I walked out the door and the sun was peeking through the clouds, trying to grace us with its presence.
I led the way to the bakery and Wes walked by my side. He pulled out a hat and sunglasses from his bag he was wearing. I just noticed the bag and got a good look at it. It was a simple gray backpack that anyone would wear, it just had .W.J. embroidered on it. He caught me looking at his bag and smiled, "Always have to be prepared."
"For what?"
"Anything, rain, snow, the sun." He said pointing up to the sky.
"Snow. Really?" You think that it's going to snow in the middle of August?" I scoffed.
