Chapter 1/4
-George Washington is no fool.
He knows that his teaching assistant, Alexander Hamilton, has been eyeing him up as a predator would eye its prey. Knows that he's stalking in the bushes, waiting to pounce, waiting to take what he wants. He also knows that Alexander isn't a big fan of waiting, that he much prefers going after something he desires as soon as he realizes he desires. It started almost immediately, as soon as he was assigned to Washington's class of unenthusiastic high school students. Lingering touches, sizzling stares, tense silence. All the tale-tell signs of interest. Mutual interest, unfortunately enough. Alexander Hamilton is undeniably pretty with his long black hair and piercing black gaze. His honey-sweet voice, his intelligent mind, his witty remarks, his fiery passion, his inability to back down from a fight, and his immovable commitment to his work. All these endearing traits call to George, like a sirens song. Like he is a moth and Alexander is flame. Confusing and intriguing and so very dangerous. And, after all, curiosity kills, doesn't it?
But George Washington is no fool.
There is a never-ending list of reasons why pursuing whatever crackles beneath their words and looks and touches is a terrible idea. A list George is hesitantly adding to every day. One of the bigger reasons is that getting involved with another member of staff is never a good idea, especially if he is that member of staff's superior. It could, at best, get Alexander removed from his guidance and reward him with strange looks from other teachers and students alike, and, at worst, get them both fired from their jobs with permanent stains on their teaching records—Alexander hasn't even worked here for a year, George doesn't want to be the reason he has to leave. Another big reason is that Alexander is almost half his age, with the younger at twenty-five and the elder at forty-one. And while they would both be consenting adults, it still feels strange and a bit icky, however, Alexander doesn't seem to mind one bit. And the most glaring, blaring, walls unbroken, alarm bells ringing reason why this is, in fact, a terrible, terrible idea is that Alexander is married. And has been for the better half of five years.
And George Washington is no fool. Or homewrecker.
Of course, After Martha Washington's untimely death, George has been lonely. Unbearably so. She had passed when they were both in their early thirties, much too young. Ever since then, he hasn't tried very hard to meet anyone new. He's grown accustomed to coming home to a quiet house, to falling asleep in a cold bed and now, after years of healing, he finds it more comforting than devastating. And he's content with his silent life. But loneliness attacks even the most social of people, feeling alone in a crowded room. feeling alone in an empty room, George is not social but he is lonely. Teaching had helped with that feeling immensely, feeling needed, appreciated, it makes everything worth it. That look on a student's face when they finally understand something, when they raise their hand to ask a question, when they get a high grade on a test. Despite his outward demeanor of being the harsh, cold, intimidating teacher, deep down, Washington is nothing but a soft pile of mush for his students, for his class. He will not give it up so foolishly, no matter how handsome his TA may be, no matter how his pupils burn with such intensity, no matter how his cocky smirk and snarky comments are a blatant challenge, pleading to be told off, to be put in his place. So, George keeps his distance.
Or, he tries to, at least. With him practically acting as Alexander's mentor, it's shockingly difficult to get away. Obviously, Alexander is around during his lessons, taking notes and helping students if George is occupied—he's even started teaching a couple lessons by himself whilst Washington observes him, the students taking an immediate liking to him. But Alexander spends break and lunch in Washington's room instead of going out or to the staff room as most of the other TA's do. And because George doesn't do any of those things either, he is stuck once again. Alexander also comes early and stays late to help with marking and preparing the next day's lessons so George is smothered by his presence before, after, and during school. And smothered, he most definitely is. Alexander is touchy. He sits as close as humanly possible whenever he gets the chance and has a habit of squeezing shoulders when he is messing around, his hands reluctant to pull away. During class time he is constantly on his feet, finding every and any excuse possible to brush past George as he walks around the classroom, he also doesn't give up any chance to make fun of George, especially in front of the kids, they seem to love it and that only encourages the menace even further, revelling in their giggles and chuckles as he keeps that dark eye contact. He challenges. He pleads. The look that could break even the strongest of men. And George never claimed to be strong.
