BY MIDAFTERNOON, THERE WAS still no sign of Finnick or of the others and Juniper's patience was beginning to get tested. She still had Wiress on a firm hold with Johanna traipsing behind her, Blight still carrying Beetee and they were all getting thirsty. The four of them, as Beetee was yet to gain consciousness, were panting and Juniper could feel a stitch rising.
"We have to stop." Blight shook his head, red in the face. "We can't keep going like this."
"I agree," Johanna said as she dropped the wire and the axe, immediately slumping onto the spongy ground. "We haven't found a single water source and there have been no clues of Finnick or of the others."
Juniper licked her dry, cracked lips as she slowly let go of Wiress, pushing her gently onto the ground as she ran a hand down her sweaty face. Wiress happily obliged to sit as she crawled over to where Blight had laid down Beetee, beginning to mutter something.
"He's gonna die soon..." Blight whispered as he eyed the unconscious man, rubbing his sore palms. Juniper noticed that Beetee's blood had stained his flesh. "He's bled out a lot. I don't know how much longer he has."
"There has to be something in this jungle that will help him," Johanna said, looking around at the greenery.
"Maybe." Juniper shrugged. "But do either of you have experience in healing because I definitely don't."
Both of them shook their heads and they all settled into a silence as they tried to catch their breaths, the only thing heard being their deep pants, the buzz of insects... and Wiress's singing.
"Hickory dickory dock. The mouse went up the clock," she began to quietly sing as if it was to calm Beetee's unconscious body. "The clock struck one. The mouse went down. Hickory dickory dock. Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock, tick tock."
"I'm sorry — what is she doing?" Johanna raised a brow as she looked from the woman from Three to Blight and Juniper.
"We did say she was in shock..." Blight murmured.
"A snake. Hickory dickory dock. The snake went up the clock. The clock struck two. The snake went down. Hickory dickory dock."
"And she is called Nuts..." Juniper added.
But before anyone could add to the conversation, the sound of a cannon made them freeze. The bloodbath at the Cornucopia had finished and they were allowed to know how many were dead.
One. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six. Seven.
"Seven..." Juniper murmured. "Not much for a bloodbath."
"A squirrel. Hickory dickory dock. The squirrel went up the clock." Wiress replied, though she wasn't talking to Juniper. She was still mumbling the song to Beetee as she rocked herself. "The clock struck three. The squirrel went down. Hickory dickory dock. Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock, tick tock."
