Nandini...Adithan wanted to talk so much, yet nothing came out of his mouth, grief choked his throat. He took in a shaky breath as the door closed in on him. All the moments he shared with her flashed before his very eyes. Karikalan held the closed door for support.
All those sleepless nights he had spent, He had thought about what to say to Nandini, when he finally meets her, he wanted to fall on his knees and beg for her forgiveness, plead with her for a second chance.
Adithan was transported back to the forest where he had first met her, only this time, the lap which held the hurt deer held Veera Pandiyan, trying a hundred times more frantically to save him. To save Veera Pandiyan.
He wanted to cry and scream out loud, but his tears seemed to have dried up. His throat felt as if someone was piercing through it with a sword. His stomach was in knots. He felt sick, seeing Veera Pandiyan in her lap. His mind was in a state of frenzy, every cell of his body wanted to run away with her, but his duty stopped him from doing so.
The corner of his mouth twitched in anger. The grip around the sword tightened, the engraving pierced his palms, but he didn't care. He pushed open the door, hoping for her to not be there, and for it to be all a dream. But no, she was there in flesh and blood.
The door closed on itself, Adithan and Nandini exchanged glances, and a staring contest ensued.
Oh god, she looked beautiful, the same flower girl he had fallen in love it all those years ago. Her long black hair, her sea blue eyes, her flower-like hands. Adithan was overwhelmed, he didn't know whether to laugh out loud or cry or scream at his fate. Out of all the people in this world, destiny chose Nandini to save Veera Pandiyan.
Karikalan winced seeing Nandini's bloodshot eyes, shedding tears for Veera Pandiyan.
Nandini looked down at Veera Pandiyan who was crawling back on the bed, scared of Adithan's dreadful sword. Nandini pressed Veera Pandiyan's hands gesturing everything would be okay and swiftly got up and fell on her knees in front of Karikalan.
"Please," Nandini breathed, clasping her palms which were covered in Veera Pandiyan blood. "Please, I beg you, spare his life," Karikalan turned to the side, unable to see her like this, on her knees, begging him for another man's life.
The bloodlust returned to Adithan when he heard Veera Pandiyan utter her name. "Nandini..." Veera Pandiyan groaned reaching for his sword. Nandini didn't turn back but was piercing Adithan with her eyes, desperate eyes.
"Please, I-I beg you," Nandini's beautiful voice broke, the voice which he had adored so much, now begged for the life of his rival. Adithan's bloodshot eyes met hers.
Agony and rage. That's all Nandini could see in his eyes.
"Please," Her hands were shaking in fear. Adithan wanted to lift her up and wipe away her tears, but something stopped him. Anger, betrayal, he felt as if she betrayed him. Why else would she try to save this wretched man's life?
Adithan's eyes turned bloodshot red. Karikalan tried so hard to ignore her pleading. He turned toward Veera Pandiyan. His eyes were flaming. The thunder thudded outside, a huge flash of lightning lit up the dim hut.
Nandini followed Adithan's line of sight, "No!" Nandini screamed. "Please!" But her pleadings were not reaching his ears, he was blinded by rage and anger.
Karikalan pushed aside Nandini and approached Veera Pandiyan, he held his wounded stomach and crawled back, shaking in fear, the fish-hilted sword felt heavy in his hands.
Before Adithan could swing his sword, Nandini dove in, putting herself between Veera Pandiyan and Adithan's sword. Veera Pandiyan gathered his last bit of strength and raised his sword.
Adithan's rage grew at her actions, he felt as if sharp daggers were piercing his chest. He was blinded by rage and bloodlust. Karikalan hesitated, his hands trembled as he reached out for Nandini's soft hands. Her hands were shaking in fear, and drenched in his rival's blood.
"No! No!!!" Nandini shrieked as Adithan shoved her aside. In one split second, Adithan's sword swung down, blood sprayed on Nandini's face, and her screamings ceased. His face was cold, with no signs of remorse or compassion.
A look of horror passed over her face, as she saw Adithan dragging Veera Pandiyan's lifeless body and severed head outside. Without looking back at her, abandoning her the same way he did years ago. Nandini sat there, trembling in fear, unable to do anything, she couldn't move a muscle. Nandini looked at Veera Pandiyan's blood smeared her hands and cried out loud.
Adithan stopped outside the hut, forcing every cell of his body not to turn back and run to her. Karikalan breathed in sharply, blinked away his tears, and started walking away, unable to hear her weeping. He had just committed the worst mistake of his life. The one which would haunt him till his grave.
