I was screwed.

My mother had seen Alex leave the hallway. And then she saw me slip out a while later.

This was bad.

After the Thames family left, she dragged me upstairs into my room and slammed the door.

"What were you doing alone with Alex? What if Jenna or Allen had seen you?" she exclaimed in anger, throwing her hands up in the air like a mad woman.

"Nothing happened. It was Alex who dragged me in there--"

"Don't even try blaming Alex. He barely spared you a glance so why would he drag you into that room?" she asked with disbelief.

I stood up and walked up to her cautiously. "Mom please believe me. Nothing happened. He just wanted to talk to me privately."

She glared at me with a bitter look. "Talk to you? About what?"

I shook my head and sighed. "Alex was my mentor two years ago. We both went to the same law school. He helped me out with my project."

"Okay but that doesn't explain why he privately wanted to talk to you," she spat.

I pressed my lips firmly together and wrinkled my nose. "So no matter what I say, you're not going to believe me right?"

She put her hands up in the air to indicate she wanted me to stop talking. "It doesn't matter. From now on, stay away from him. He's going to marry Jenna."

"He told me he doesn't want to be with Jenna."

She sent me an icy glare. "It doesn't matter what he wants. If James says it's going to happen, then it will."

"But mom—"

"The conversation ends here! Just stay away. If you screw this up, Allen will divorce me."

"What?" I asked in surprise. "Why would he divorce you over something like this?"

"Well if he finds out that you were behind Jenna's failed engagement, then he's going to blame me. He started an argument with me yesterday so I'm already on thin ice. If he finds a reason to get angry at me one more time, I know what will happen."

My step-father has never shown me his dark side. But according to my mother, it was bad. And honestly I don't want to get on his bad side.

"Okay I'll try my best to stay away."

My mother suddenly walked up to me and grabbed my jaw, forcing me to face her.

"You're not understanding me," she muttered with gritted teeth. "You and I have no rights in this family. Do you know how much I had to beg to change my name to Kensington! Jenna has the upper hand right now so we need to stay out of her affairs. She caught me taking money out of Allen's account so she could snitch on me anytime she wants. So you better try more than your best. Stay away."

I've never seen this side of my mother. I thought she liked Jenna but she's actually just faking her affection. She's scared of her.

I nodded my head in understanding. "Why did you take money from Allen without asking?"

She let go of my jaw and went to sit down on the bed. "To pay off your father's stupid medical school debt. There's still $100,000 left. Allen doesn't know I've been paying it and I don't want him to find out."
