2 years later...

Its been two weeks since I graduated law school.

I need to start looking for a job but things in my family have been hectic.

My step-father Allen Kensington is running in parliament. He's a famous politician so we've had guests and the press visit our residence weekly. My mother Ellen is a nurse and she's been working double shifts at the hospital because she got promoted to a higher position. And my older step-sister Jenna just completed her first year as a surgical resident. And my parents are trying to get her married.

Apparently they've already found someone and his family is visiting us tonight. That's why I'm in the kitchen helping the chef cook while Jenna whines in the corner.

She has a secret boyfriend our parents don't know about. Someone named Asher Barrett. Apparently he's super rich and comes from a prestigious family. But his father doesn't like our father so he told Asher to stay away from Jenna.

But of course Jenna never takes no for an answer.

We don't have a good relationship. Typical step-sister feud.

She's the original Kensington heir while I'm just the charity case. My mom is a good person but after my father died, she changed and married Allen for the money. It is true we were struggling but I think we could've managed without Allen's help.

But anyways, I've always stayed out of the spotlight. Jenna is the favorite, even my mom treats her better than me. But I'm 25. I've learned to hide my pain.

Jenna has always been the golden child. Whatever she wants, she gets. So I've learned its best to give her what she wants. She used to bully me a lot when I was a child. She used to turn all our classmates against me. Jenna has always been the one to put me down. She's the only person I can't mess with or she'll hurt me back.

"They're here," my mother called out. "Jenna, come to the guest room to greet them."

"Ugh, I hate this," I heard Jenna mutter as she left the room.

I watched her leave as I placed the pastries on the decorative plate.

"I should probably bring this in," I stated to the chef, picking up the plate.

I heard muffled laughter from the distance. They must have already entered the formal dining room.

I didn't know who the family was. Honestly, I didn't like getting involved with Jenna's business so I did my best to stay out of it.

However, I wish I would have paid attention this once because I was not prepared to see Alex and his parents sitting in the room.

He was the last person I would expect to be sitting in this room.

Its been two years since I last saw him.

I genuinely thought I would never see him again.

I couldn't help but silently gasp.

He and his parents were sitting at the table facing towards me with Jenna and Allen facing them.

Alex was looking down at his phone while his parents were conversing with my parents.

"Ah, this must be your step daughter," called out Alex's father as he waved me in.

That's when Alex looked up.

I was hoping  Alex didn't recognize me. I was wishing so hard that he had forgotten who I was. I mean we only had one brief interaction. I was a random girl he mentored in the past. We had no significant relationship. We were strangers.
