When Weiying came out of His apartment building the next morning, He was surprised to see Lanzhan’s black Challenger in the parking lot next to His decidedly shabby Dodge Neon. He offered him a wave from where he sat in the driver’s seat. Then he was stepping out into the late fall air.
Lanzhan looked more like himself today. The pressed trouser and tailored Coat were back. His dark hair was combed and he was holding himself with the confidence He associated with him. It was a far cry from the Lanzhan who had shown up at His door last night.
“Good morning,” he said as He walked up to him.
“Morning,” Weiying said, confused.
“I thought I’d give you a ride to work,” Lanzhan explained.
He frowned. “You drove all the way down Here to pick me up? That doesn’t make sense. You live and work in the High Society.”
He rubbed the back of his neck. “I wanted to talk to you about this some more before we got to work.”
“Oh.”
For a moment they just stared at each other. Then Lanzhan cleared his throat and held his hand out to the car.
“Shall we?”
Weiying nodded. Then Lanzhan went and opened His door for Him. He arched His brow behind his back but He sank into the black leather seat and muttered a “thank you” to him before Lanzhan shut His door and came around to sit beside His. As he shut his door, He caught a whiff of his cologne. If He wasn’t mistaken, it was Sandwood.
Weiying shifted in His seat. Lanzhan had been His boss for a year, but He couldn’t recall a time they had been in such close quarters together. And He was going to marry him. He must have lost His mind.
Lanzhan looked over at His. “Thanks again. For all of this.” He gestured to two coffee cups sitting in the holders. “I got you a latte. I didn’t know how you like your coffee, so I just told the barista to make something popular. I think it’s caramel or something.”
His eyes flickered to the cup. “Oh. Thanks.”
Lanzhan offered His a half-smile, then he turned the engine over and backed out of the spot.
Once he was back on the road he glanced over at His again. “Okay, so we have to tell Nie Mingjue we’re getting married so they don’t fire me.”
Weiying nodded. “Okay.”
“Then I need you to set up a meeting with my immigration lawyer—shit.” He shook his head. “I’ll set it up.” Lanzhan looked at Him again. “You can’t be my assistant anymore. Ethics and all that.”
