They were sitting at the small dining room table in Lanzhan’s apartment sharing a meal of takeout. Weiying had changed out of his slacks and blazer into a sweatshirt and yoga pants, and Lanzhan had exchanged his starched button-down and tie for sweats t-shirt.

Weiying was slowly noticing that Lanzhan had scars on his back that he still didn’t know the story behind. He had pale skin and golden eyes that seemed to smolder or ignite depending on his mood, complimented nicely by his hair that stayed combed and neat for long. And the more he saw him outside of his business clothes, the more he realized that Lanzhan was well-built, with wiry arms and broad shoulders.
It was strange to him that he had never noticed that during the time he had worked for him. And now he was wondering what he thought about him , if he had ever found him attractive. Not that he would ever have the nerve to ask.
Lanzhan swallowed his bite of food. “Totally.”
“Well, I’m glad I’m not the only one.” Weiying took a sip of his wine. The light above them caught his ring, and Weiying found himself looking at it again. He set the glass down so he could twist his hand to watch the light refract. “Thank you for the ring. It’s...it really is beautiful.”
Lanzhan shrugged. “Don’t mention it. I want this to be as painless for you as possible.” His eyes dropped to his plate. “I know I’m asking a lot from you, and I...I want you to know how much I appreciate this, Weiying.”
“I know you do, Lanzhan.” Weiying offered him a smile. “Though to be honest, I think I have to be a little crazy to go along with all of this. I mean, this is more than just weird. It’s actually kind of insane.”
Lanzhan snorted. “Yeah, it is.” He looked up at him. “Why did you agree to it, anyway?”
Weiying shrugged as he pushed a piece of dumpling around on his plate. “To be honest, I really don’t know. I know that I didn’t want to get fired. And...I know that I couldn’t let you get deported. To just...have your whole life ripped away from you. I couldn’t imagine it.” He shook his head slowly. “And I mean, I figured you were pretty desperate if you were asking me to marry you.”
“Yeah…” Lanzhan rubbed the back of his neck. “To be completely honest, I don’t really date. Or have friends. Basically, the only people I really hang around in a non-work related capacity are Xichen and Meng Yao.”
He peeked up at Weiying, half-expecting him to laugh at him. But to his surprise, Weiying just nodded.
“I’m pretty much in the same boat,” he said. “I don’t really have any friends up here. I’ve been on a few dates, but nothing serious.”
Lanzhan frowned. “Really?”
“Really.” Weiying cocked his head at him. “Why is that surprising?”
Lanzhan shrugged. “I don’t know. Everyone at the office seems to like you. And I thought you said you went out for drinks with Su She.”
“Well, sometimes. But it’s not like we’re really friends or anything.” Weiying’s mouth puckered. “I’m pretty sure Su She had a crush on me when I first started at Cloud Recesses, but I was fresh out of a bad relationship and not looking for anything, so we just never did anything about it. And others only like me because I’m close to you and they wanted to bone you since he started working there.”
Lanzhan snorted out an incredulous laugh. “Well, that sucks for them. I’m a taken man.”
Weiying laughed. Then he looked at him. “We really are crazy, aren’t we?”
