chapter ten.
( girlhood blossoming into adulthood )
S1E10 — hi, society.
THERE CAME A TIME IN A GIRL'S LIFE when she bloomed into the mature theme of being an adult, all through the most extraordinary season, Ophelia figured, of Debutante. Walking the steps with a respectful man on her on her arm lead her into the world of being viewed as someone more worthy than she already was, proclaiming herself as a woman to the Upper East Side and all those who deemed her an admirable candidate for their sons when she eventually grew up.Ever since Ophelia was young, she yearned to attend Cotillion, to walk down those stairs in a luxurious dress and present herself to the community of wealth and prosper. It was something she had watched with envy in her eyes, her mother being part of the committee and typically brought Ophelia along to witness, and she couldn't help but be envious of those she witnessed participate in the ball.
Despite it being slightly outdated ( and a tad misogynistic ), it was a tradition that Ophelia had been brought up with, and couldn't help but be exhilarated at the prospect of celebrating her womanhood and valued in the world of the rich. So, inevitably, Ophelia was rather disconcerted when the news of Serena pulling out of the event had worried Ophelia terribly, and the blonde figured it had to do with a certain Humphrey boy.
For years, her, Blair and Serena had aspired over the idea of attending Cotillion — going over dress ideas, potential dates, and teasingly scrutinising every girl that didn't fit their 'perfect' standards. They'd flick through the newest magazines that showed off the latest season, picking the dresses that they deemed acceptable to wear for the prestige event. It was all very thrilling, so when it came to Ophelia's year, she was more than exhilarated for the event, unable to think or talk of anything else.
It was a couple of days before the expected event, and Ophelia sat in her living room, a small cup of tea on the coffee table, steaming perfectly as she flicked through a copy of Vogue ( one of the many copies that decorated her home ), eyeing the pieces that could potentially be added to her wardrobe. She, as usual, was surrounded in silence, the absence of her parents more prominent than ever, given the looming event and the promise they'd made to her weeks prior — they would return for Cotillion, to watch their only child descend from the staircase and announce her status as a woman.
