As soon as I stepped out, the sirens began to blare. I ducked behind a building and sat in an alleyway, hugging my bag.
"Long time no see, kid." A voice said, walking towards me. The footsteps felt familiar, but I couldn't put my finger on it.
"Where are you running from?" I looked up at him, then it hit me. The man standing before me, was Jei. Jei, the leader of villains from another universe. But what was he doing here...?
"..." I tried to speak, but I was still unable to. He just smiled at me. He knew what I tried saying, I don't know how but he did.
"There was this bright burst of light, then we wound up here. We don't know how it happened, but I bet Iwa misses us." He pulled out a cigar, lit it with his finger and placed it in his mouth.
"You're very far from your universe, aren't you? Is Toshiro here too?" I nodded, then hugged my knees even tighter. Something weird is going on, but I don't want to know what exactly.
"I can't sense him anymore, and I believe you can't sense him either." My head perked up when he said that. Xen has been missing for a while now, but I didn't think Jei would know that. Although, he is very smart and understands my situation. He has something similar to mine, except his is the most powerful being among them all and mine is kind of arrogant.
"I can't sense Aleax anymore. Not since we got here. I suspect it's the same with Xen?" I nodded. That's weird, all of our inner beings have disappeared. Maybe it's this universe's atmosphere? Or maybe... nah, couldn't be. There is no way someone in this universe is keeping them hostage. It's very unlikely.
"...Jei... where did they go...?" I mustered the strength to break through this speaking paralysis.
"I would tell you if I knew, kid. We'll just have to live without them for a bit. It'll be hard, but we'll figure it out." For some reason, his voice seemed very calming. It made me relieved, in a way.
Then it hit me, I'm running from the cops and Jei needs a place to lay low. Toshiro is probably out looking for me, but I need to get back to the apartment. Maybe I can tell him to meet me at the apartment through my telepathy? It's worth a shot, and it'll be better than texting him, where the cops could read it.
I closed my eyes and inhaled calmly, then exhaled. I hope this works, but there's a high chance it won't. 'Toshiro...' I tried connecting to his brain, but it seems he's too far away. The only voices I heard were of a dog and a person walking. It doesn't work on Jei for very odd reasons. His brain is coded a certain way so that it's like a one-way stream. He can read other's minds but they can't read his.
I opened my eyes and shook my head.
"No luck?" Jei asked.
"I don't know what the problem is, but it seems like this world is very limiting to my abilities."
"Everything will work out. Don't you have that astral projection ability? Maybe you can use that to try to reach him. Normal people won't see you, right?"
I nodded. "That's a good idea, actually. But how did you know about that?"
A grin came across his face. "Kid, I've been here a lot longer than you have. I think I've had my fair share of hidden talents."
I shrugged and closed my eyes one more time. This time, a ghost-like version of myself stepped out of my body. I could see everything, even with my physical eyes closed. Jei seemed to keep his eyes on the ghost-like version of myself. I didn't mind, though.
I managed to locate Toshiro. He stood next to the police, seeming to be answering questions. I floated in front of him, waving my hand in his face. He noticed me but tried not to react, as the police officer would've noticed his reaction.
I whispered to Toshiro: "ditch the police and meet me back at the apartment." He nodded and I flew back to my body and opened my eyes.
"You want me to cover for you or...?" Jei said with a smile.
"Do you want to come with? We might be able to send you two home." I replied, standing up. He nodded. I had just realized that his daughter, Hikaru, was fast asleep in his arms.
"I think I can get us there really fast... are you good with portal travel?" I looked up at him. I guess I didn't really notice his attire. He was a very tall man, about 6'8. He had glasses, small square ones, sitting atop the bridge of his nose. He wore a mask around his neck. He had quite a bit of muscle showing through the tank top he wore. Pitch-black jeans he wore, shining in the sunlight. Honestly, he was very attractive, for the leader of villains. His golden engagement ring glimmered on his ring finger. Everyone knew he was engaged to a hero. Some of his own believed he was a traitor. Everyone else had very high hopes for this. They wanted the war to end, yet they wanted nothing more than to be the ones to succeed as the heroes fell. He wanted nothing more than to raise a family in the hostile environment he called his home. Why they arrived in this world, I'll never know.
He noticed my zoning out and waved his hand in front of my face.
"Hey, are you good?"
I blinked a couple times and nodded. "Y-yeah, just zoning out."
