It's almost 5p.m. and Massad is still staring at his phone.
After a long & hectic week, Massad is ready to unwind but not the way some would expect. Instead, the unpretentious young man chooses to stay home, accompanied by his little biddable Welsh corgi who sits next to him.
"What am I doing?" He asks his companion, looking over at the little short-haired mutt.
The corgi only makes eye contact with him from his comfortable lying position before looking away. Massad sighs and looks away too, staring at his phone again.
He leans into his couch, debating if he should call, wanting to hear her voice after weeks of not speaking to her. It was only natural to him, she is his best friend after but really he sounded like someone who had no friends.
Like clockwork, his phone rings, making him race for it as he looks at the caller ID but to his surprise, it's none other than Hien.
Massad answers immediately.
"Massad, I need a favor."
Massad's eyebrows raise at her sudden tone and request but he doesn't think too much of it.
"No hello, how'you doin' 'Sad?" He chuckles, earning a snort from Hien. The illustrious nickname she had given him due to his lonesome nature rolling off his tongue naturally. After five years, he was used to it by now.
"Hi 'Sad, how are you? What's up? Are you sitting on your couch again with Boris? Hi baby!"
At his name, the little pup lifts his head and looks over at Massad who pets his head.
It was his turn to snort.
"Are you spying on me now?"
"No, I just know you. You are kind of predictable, you know." She giggles and he hears shuffling, "So about that favor..."
"Yes?"
He hears her inhale before exhaling and frowns a bit, slowly becoming nervous of her next words.
"Hien?"
"I think my coworker likes me."
Massad is silent. His mind is blank, slightly caught off-guard by his friend's words but he can't help the smile that spreads across his pink lips at her words.
"Hello?!" Hien squawks, making him pry his phone off his eardrum feeling like it would burst.
"I'm still here Kong."
At his words, she gasps and soon enough he has a FaceTime request appearing on his screen. He knows what she's about to say but still accepts it.
"I told you to stop calling me that!"
"I told you to stop calling me that." Massad mimics her and breaks out laughing when she stares at him in disbelief.
She stares back, hands crossed wearing a pair of teddy bear pajama top and pants while she sits on her bed.
"I didn't call to hear you call me out of my name! I need help!" She playfully cries before falling against her pillow, her phone facing her white ceiling.
"So who's the guy?"
"How do you know?" She picks up her phone to face him and he simply smiles at her.
"He's not very stealth. I see him at your office everytime I come over."
"Really? What is he usually doing?"
"Hmm... looking over at you when you're not paying attention."
"Wow."
"Yep." He grins, "So what's the favor for?"
Hien giggles, waving him off, "Nothing, I'll see you tomorrow?"
"Wait, what?"
With a final wave, she ends the call leaving Massad utterly confused.
"She's such a buzzkill isn't she, boy?"
Quietly, Boris snuggles closer to his master who stares at him with love.
This wasn't the call he expected but Hien had succeeded in brightening his weekend.
