𝐈 𝐆𝐑𝐀𝐁𝐁𝐄𝐃 𝐌𝐘 𝐋𝐔𝐍𝐂𝐇 𝐁𝐎𝐗 𝐀𝐍𝐃 car keys before heading out the front door of my job. "You about to go on break," Marissa asks.
"Yes ma'am," I reply as I put on my jacket.
When the bright sun hit my face, I sighed. How can it be so sunny yet so cold?! Ugh.
I unlocked my car as I approached. "Whew shit," I say as I close the door behind me. I immediately lock the doors and put the key into the ignition, starting the engine.
I set my lunch box down in the middle console and unzip it before I turned the heat on.
Before I could open my lunch, I feel my phone vibrate. I pull my phone out of my pocket seeing it's Graham Facetiming me. I smile as I answer, "Hello hello!"
He was posing in the camera when the call connected causing me to laugh. "Hey Lani what you doing," he asks.
"I just got in the car for my break," I tell him as I prop my phone up for him to see me clearly. Gam nods, "Damn I called right on time huh?"
I pull out my ham and cheese sandwich I made. "Yes I had to hurry up and get in this car too cause it's too damn cold out," I say.
I take the sandwich out the ziplock bag. I closed my eyes and said a silent prayer to myself, "God is great, God is good let us thank him for our food. By his hands we all are fed, thank you for our daily bread."
I took a quick bite into the sandwich as Graham spoke, "How was the day back though?"
Yesterday was Thanksgiving and of course my job decides we should go back in the day after! I shrug my shoulders, "Same ole' day nothing new ever happens," I answer back.
Graham laughs, "Well it's all worth it ain't it? You're doing something you love," he questions me.
I nod. "Hell yeah I wouldn't trade this job for the world but why have us come back right after a holiday! Give the food some time to digest as least," I admit, shaking my head.
I sipped on my water as Graham shook his head at me. "I don't know where I went wrong," he says, laughing.
I smile, taking another bite. "Stop you did all you could."
"I really did," he replies.
I swallow my food and look up at the screen, "Where's Ms. Vonna," I ask him.
"She's at work but she should be home in a couple hours."
I raise an eyebrow, "Aren't you supposed to be at work too," I question.
Graham simply nods.
"So why you not there?"
He sighs and mugs me, "I left early shit I was tired so I came back home," he tells me.
"Cause you work everyday and barely even take time for yourself Gam! Ms. Lavonna and I keep tellin' you to chill out sometimes," I scold Graham.
I hear him smack his lips as I'm pulling out my bowl of fruit. "I have to work Noelani," he says.
I nod, "And I'm not saying don't but put in some off days and relax— only time you do anything is if Ms. Vonna forces you to go on a trip with her," I explain.
"I'm gonna take a break Lani don't worry about me ight? Working is just something I've always done," he admits.
Trust me I know... Graham worked two jobs while I was growing up although he made sure to make time for me, it was always noticed how tired he would be but continued to do things to make me happy!
"I know but don't go over your limits," I warn him. Graham waves me off and sighs, "Damn I thought callin' my daughter would be so sweet and nice but I just got lectured about working at my job," he adds.
I laugh, covering my mouth. "You're hardheaded Gam and I feel like I gotta look out for you," I say.
"I'm good," he assures me.
I stare at him through the phone for a minute. "Okay I believe you."
"Now I'm gonna go find me something to eat cause you got me hungry watching you eat that sandwich," he laughs.
I shake my head and look down at the sandwich, that's half eaten now. "It's definitely good," I chime in.
"I see," he says. "But I'll talk to you later I'll let you finish your food I love you," he adds.
I smile and say, "I love you too and tell Ms. Lavonna I asked about her."
"I will," he tells me.
"Alright see you," I say while we say our goodbyes before hanging up.
