so what do you think?” Thomas asks after giving Adam and I a couple minutes to look over the contract.
I sigh, skimming it once again, “I just don’t know.” I say honestly. Adam grabs my hand and gives it a small reassuring squeeze. We were finally sitting down and talking about signing Katies drawing over to the company.
“I’ll give you guys a bit, come and get me when you’ve come to a decision.” He gets up from his seat and walks out of the office.
I t was silent for a bit between the two of us, neither really knowing what to say. “we already talked this out.” Adam finally breaks the ice.
“I know. And you had really good reasons too. It’s just, she’s our daughter and I don’t know-I just don’t know.” A few tears began to slip down my cheek and Adam was quick to wipe them away.
“ssh, it’s okay Liana. We don’t need to do this.” He whispers, holding me close, “though I’d much rather she pay for her own education in 12 years.” I laugh through my tears. “see, I knew I could get you to smile.”
“Adam, why does this seem like such a big deal to me?” He shrugs without an answer. “I just want what’s best for her…”
“we both do. Remember what I said when this first came up? About splitting the money, teaching her how to spend it wisely and save for what she really wants. Plus, she won’t always be asking us for money just because she knows we have it.”
I lean against the wall and think about everything that’s been offered through this. “okay, I’ll allow it. But only this one time. She’ll make enough money from this, I don’t want her everywhere. It’s hard enough being the daughter of someone famous.” He picks up the contract and hands me a pen along with it.
“just this once. When she becomes of age, we’ll allow her to make the choice of doing more.” I look over the contract once more and then let the pen touch paper, signing it.
I leave after that, needing to get back to the bakery. Adam took the contract back to Tom while I headed to work. Katie was now an advertisement artist. That still just shocked me.
“Hey Julie!” Stacy calls when I enter the bakery. “This guy keeps calling you, I think you may want to call him back.”
I laugh and set down my stuff, “would you like to elaborate?”
“not much more to it. His number is on your desk.”
Nodding, I head into my office, spotting the number right away. The only thing I recognized from it was the Italian area code. Confused, I dial it curious as to who would be answering.
“hello?” a males voice with a heavy accent answers the phone.
“Hey, this is Juliana Richards, I got a call from this number.”
“ah! Juliana, it’s Guy, Adams step-father.”
I smile at the one and only time I spoke with him, “yes, I remember you. is everything alright?”
“well, I have someone here who wants to talk to you. So I’ll let her tell you.”
“someone-“ but before I could ask who it was they got onto the phone.
“Jules?” Dakotas voice rang on the other end.
“oh my god, Dakota!” I screamed, really excited. I hadn’t talked to her since the wedding.
“and Finn.”
“of course, and Finn.”
He fakes a gasp, “what? I don’t get an “Oh my god!” too?”
“in your dreams.” I joke, “now, what’s up?”
“we’ve got some news for you.”
“good news, bad news…??”
“good, very good.” Finn answers. Just then the door to the office opened and Adam stood there with my jacket, “hold on a second Finn.” I turn to Adam, “what are you doing here?”
Adam steps in and closes the door. “you forgot this, I thought you might need it.”
I roll my eyes and go back to Dakota and Finn, “okay, what’s up?”
“is Adam there with you?” Dakota asks, excitement on the tip of her tongue.
“um, yeah, just walked in.”
“okay, put us on speaker.” I did so and set the phone down on the table. “Jules, Adam…I'm pregnant.”
“seriously?” Adam asks while I just stood there speechless.
“yeah, twins. That’s all we know right now.”
“congrats guys.” Adam nudges me to say something but I was still too shocked. He laughs, “um, Liana’s happy too…I think.”
“Liana?” Dakota asks. “ooh! Finn! Liana, can we please name one of them Liana if there’s a girl?”
“uh, sure.”
“you’re going to name a kid after me?” I ask.
“of course girl. Now, why is he calling you that?”
I look over at Adam and we share a secretive smile, “I got bored with the regular nicknames.”
“and I told him about what my dad called me.”
“holy shit.” She whispers and we heard Finn laugh. “that is so romantic.”
It was Adam and my turn to laugh, “romantic? It was actually just one small conversation in the midst of many small conversations.” I tell her.
“still romantic. And I don’t know, shows something about your relationship.”
“guys, don’t listen to my crazy wife, she’s clueless sometimes.” Finn says and we heard him get slapped. “ow!”
“I’m not crazy! She hasn’t let anyone call her that since, well, six years ago. I remember when-“
I quickly cut her off, not wanting that story to be told yet. “okay, we’re going to go now. Congratulations and be safe. Can’t wait til you guys get home. Bye.” I end the call before she could say anything more.
“something I shouldn’t know?” Adam asks quietly, moving closer to me.
I nod slowly, “something no one should know.” I whisper, the memories of my parents death coming back to me.
“when you’re ready to tell me, I know you will. For now though, let’s get you home.” I nod and wrap my arms around him, giving him a short kiss on the lips before just resting my head on his chest. “I seriously don’t know what I’d do without you Adam.”
He smiles and kisses the top of my head, “don’t know what I’d do without you either babe.”
