"Is it noticeable?"

You were sitting in your literature class with your roommate, Akiko, waiting for the professor to start the lesson. Despite your protests, she was giving you all of the details of her latest hookup, pulling the collar of her shirt down a bit and angling her body toward you so you could get a better view of the already-very-visible hickey on her neck.

"Not really," you lied, just wanting the conversation to end.

It wasn't that you had a problem with Akiko's lifestyle. You weren't like a prude or anything, you'd had sex before. Granted, the things you'd done didn't seem to be anywhere near as wild as even the most chaste of Akiko's experiences—from what she'd told you, at least. Really, you were just tired of hearing about all of the places in your house that she'd desecrated. Ignorance really was bliss when it came to that.

"Hey," one of your other roommates, Hana, said as she took a seat across from Akiko, her eyes immediately falling to her neck. She laughed. "Nice fucking hickey, dude."

Akiko gasped, covering it as she turned to you. "You said it wasn't that noticeable!"

You winced. "Well, maybe it's the lighting from where i'm sitting?"

She huffed as she pulled out her phone, deciding to ignore you by pretending to check her notifications. Hana took the opportunity to lean over to you.

"Are you gonna be around Friday night?" She asked.

"Yeah, why?"

"Well, we don't have a game until Sunday, so the boys soccer team wants to party, and since they hosted last time..."

You frowned, seeing where this was going. "Hana, the last time they came over they totally trashed our house. Don't you remember?"

"Yes, I do, but I talked to Ren and he promised that he won't let them get out of hand again."

Ren was Hana's boyfriend and, of course, the captain of the men's team. He was a nice enough guy, but you doubted his ability to control 20 rowdy college boys.

"I don't know..."

"Oh, come on! You need to learn to relax a little. It'll be fine."

"It's just that—"

"Alright, class! Textbooks out, phones away, eyes up front," the professor interrupted.

"We'll talk about it later," Hana whispered to you with a wink.

You hated parties. You especially hated them when you were the host. You hated having a bunch of strangers in your space, spilling drinks and breaking things. Worst of all you hated having to clean up after them once it was all over. Unfortunately, your roommates didn't feel this same way, so you were always outvoted any time the idea of a party came up. You knew that was how it would go this time, too.

You tried to shove your annoyance down and instead focus on the professor, who was talking about some project you'd all be doing that would run parallel to your unit on American literature.

"Alright, go ahead and break into pairs. Whoever you pick will be your partner for the length of this unit, so choose wisely."

"Hana, do you want to be my partner?" Akiko asked abruptly, still upset with you over the hickey thing.

Hana looked awkwardly between the two of you. "Uh, of course."

Shit.

You looked around the room, hoping a reasonable option would materialize in front of you. Unfortunately, it looked like everyone had already split up, not wanting to be stuck with a shitty partner. Everyone except your crush, that is.
