The Nightmare Project - Part I

Hayami tapped her foot restlessly on the floor as the teacher continued speaking. She couldn't wait to leave this class.

It had been almost a month since she had played volleyball. Almost a month since she had joined the boys team as a manager. Surprisingly enough, she ought to have gone back much sooner but she didn't know why she stayed this long.

She had made up her mind to go back to her team by the end of this week. She had no idea how she would go about saying that she was leaving the boys' team, she would just have to figure out a way to tell them nicely.

The bell rang and students started packing up their things, ready to leave.

"Before you leave,", the teacher said raising both her hands, "I would like to make an announcement. So everyone, please settle down. This will only take 10 minutes."

Hayami heard a few curse words and groans before everyone was back on their seats.

The teacher held up a sheet of paper for everyone to see. "These are the topics for your upcoming project. Make a report and presentation for the topic you choose and we will have the presentation on . . . ", she checked her phone, " on Monday."

Great. The presentation was in three days. Hayami closed her eyes against the dread that started creeping up her stomach.

Please don't let it be a group project.

"Take this very seriously. ", the teacher said with a serious look on her face, " This presentation will carry 20 marks and it will be reflected in your final report card."

Hayami noticed that everyone was sitting straighter all of a sudden. Of course nobody wanted a bad reflection on their final report card of high school.

A girl raised her hand.
"Yes?"
"Is this a group project?"
"Yes, each group will have five people.", the teacher answered and Hayami's soul was ready to leave Earth.

Hayami heard mild whispering around her. People had already started making their groups, picking people who would be beneficial to them.

Hayami scrambled her mind to come up with a solution, to do something. It wouldn't be long before-

"Ramirez-san~"

"RAMIREZ-san"

"Ra-

It was happening. It was already happening and she didn't know what to do.

People didn't normally talk to her, but whenever a group project came up, suddenly everyone wanted to be in her team.

This happened with her every time. She would say yes to them and then end up doing all the work by herself.

The teacher cleared her throat loudly and the class went silent. Hayami noticed some people were already sitting in groups.

The teacher put up another paper and pinned it to the board. "This is the list of groups that I made, go through it during the break.", she said with a sly smile, as there were groans from all over the class.

The teacher left the class as everyone rushed towards the board to check out who their group members were. She noticed Oikawa standing there, talking with another guy.

Hayami quietly slipped out of the class, avoiding the dreaded list. She assumed that if her day was bound to be ruined then she would at least choose the timing herself.

She stepped out into the corridor and headed towards Liz's class. She would first discuss her decision about leaving the team with her first and maybe Liz would suggest a flashy way for Hayami to make her entry into the gym after a month. Hayami smiled at the thought.
