Chapter 9: The Missing Clue
Later, Alan went to the Boston police station. Alan approached the desk of a police officer.
"Hello, my name is Dr. Alan Stewart. I am a doctor in San Francisco and I assist the San Francisco police with certain cases," Alan replied.
"Hello, I am Detective Scott Greenwood. I heard that you helped the police solve some murders. I am glad to meet you. What can I do to assist you?" Scott asks.
"Do you remember the man you found beaten on the road about a year ago?" Alan asked Scott, showing him a photo of Steve.
"Yes, I remember that guy. He was badly beaten and left on the streets. Someone almost ran him over. It looked as though he had been beaten by a horse. My co-workers thought he was robbed, but I didn't share their suspicion. I think he was tortured for information or owed money to someone," Scott explained.
"This man's name is Steve Brooks. He was a lawyer. He was reported missing by his sister Laura Jackson about a year ago. I think Steve was working on a case. He must have discovered something, and someone attempted to kill him to prevent him from talking," Alan explained.
I can show you the pictures of the condition we found Steve in," Scott replied, retrieving the pictures from his desk drawer.
Allen couldn't believe how badly Steve had been beaten. Alan did not know why anyone would beat someone up like that. What did Steve do to deserve this? Alan does not believe that anyone deserves to be physically assaulted. Allen knew that Steve had been beaten for what he knew. Alan wondered what Steve knew and who would try to kill him to keep him quiet.
"I was wondering if you could take me to the place where you found Steve," Alan requested.
"Yes, I will take you there. I want to do whatever I can to assist." I would like to help you with the case if that's okay," Scott asks.
"I do not mind. I could use all the help I can get," Alan agrees.
Scott took Alan to the place where they had found Steve. Alan started searching for clues. Alan noticed some negatives to some pictures. Alan is curious about whether these negatives belong to Steve or not. Alan grabbed a napkin to pick up the negatives. Alan wanted to have these negatives checked for fingerprints. Alan and Scott took the negatives to the police station for a fingerprint check.
The fingerprints belong to Steve. Alan could not believe that those negatives had been there for a year and no one had seen them. Alan wanted to develop these pictures to see what they were. Alan believes these pictures might help them find out what happened to Steve. Alan and Scott took the negatives to a store to get them developed. The store clerk told them that it was going to take him three days to get these pictures develop. Alan and Scott were traveling to Mississippi to question Steve's colleagues and gather information about the case he had been working on.
Andrew and Jane were accompanying Martin to Boston to interview individuals in the vicinity where they had discovered Steve. Alan got in touch with John Hagarty and requested that he conduct a background check on Steve's colleagues. John agrees to conduct a background check on Steve's coworker. Allen planned to wait until the photos were developed before going to Mississippi.
