Chapter 14: The Truth
Later, Jack had already arrived at the hospital.
He walked up to Jackie and asked, "What is going on? Is Sara okay?"
Jackie replied, "No, Sara has leukemia and requires a bone marrow transplant. I was tested to see if I was a match."
Jack offered to be tested as well. Jackie then informed Jack that Steve was investigating Jason Maxwell's disappearance.
"Alan found the pictures that Steve was taking of Jason," Jackie said.
Three days later, Dr. Woods revealed the results of the test.
"Jackie, I'm sorry, but you are not a match," Dr. Woods replied with a sad tone. Jackie starts to cry.
"Jackie, I know you said that you are not Sara's biological mother. Did you ever have any children?" Dr. Woods asks.
"I did become pregnant at the same time as Andy's wife, but my baby died during childbirth," Jackie explained.
"Jackie, according to Sara's blood tests, you are her biological mother. The hospital might accidentally switch your baby with your cousin's baby," Dr. Woods replied.
The next day, Jackie and Dr. Woods went to search for Dr. Roger Rice. They arrived at Dr. Rice's clinic, but it was closed. Jackie remembered a nurse named Kimberly Smart who works for Dr. Rice. After some searching, Jackie was able to locate Kimberly's address. When Jackie arrived at Kimberly's house, she saw Kimberly open the door to let her in.
"I knew this day would come, but I didn't think it would arrive so soon," Kimberly said.
You know why I am here," Jackie questioned.
"I am so sorry. Your cousin Andy and his wife Bonnie have lost their baby. Dr. Rice informed Andy that Bonnie needs to undergo a hysterectomy. Bonnie did not know that their baby had died, and Andy knew that they could not have any more children. "Andy asked Dr. Rice to switch his baby with yours," Kimberly explained.
Jackie became angry.
"How could my cousin do this to me?!" Jackie asks angrily.
"You have every right to be angry. I wanted to tell you, but I was scared. When your cousin and his wife were killed in an accident and you became Sara's legal guardian I decided not to tell," Kimberly explained.
"I understand that Andy was trying to protect his wife, but what he did was wrong," Jackie said with a hint of anger in her voice.
"There are other options besides taking the law into your own hands. For instance, Andy and Bonnie could have considered adoption. They have a good reputation and no criminal record, so it would have been easy for them to adopt." Jackie replied.
Kimberly hung her head in shame.
"I didn't improve upon what Andy and Dr. Rice were doing," she admitted. "In fact, I'm ashamed of my own actions. I didn't know what to do, and I was scared for my life."
"I do not blame you, but I am angry with my cousin and Dr. Rice. Do you know where Dr. Rice lived?" Jackie asked.
"No, he moved after delivering your baby and your cousin's baby," Kimberly replied.
Jackie saw that Laura was calling her. She quickly picked up the phone and answered,
"What is going on Laura?" Jackie asks.
"Steve has woken up from his coma and he has been asking for you," Laura replied.
Jackie felt a mix of emotions - happy that Steve had woken up, but also sad that she couldn't be there for him in person.
"I wish I could come, but Sara is sick in the hospital. She has leukemia. I cannot leave Sara, but I will call him," Jackie replied.
Jackie went to the hospital to see Dr. Woods.
"Dr. Woods, my ex-boyfriend, has just woken up from his coma. My ex-boyfriend is Sara's father," Jackie replied.
"What hospital is your ex-boyfriend admitted to?" Dr. Woods inquires.
"He is at the hospital in Boston," Jackie replied.
"I know a doctor in Boston who can help Sara. The doctor's name is Dr. Randy Baker. Your ex-boyfriend could be a bone marrow match for Sara," Dr. Woods suggested.
