It was a cold, damp Saturday morning and the rugby field was already filled with eager players and supporters. Nick had been up since dawn, preparing for the match against their biggest rivals. He was the captain of the team and was determined to lead them to victory. Charlie, his boyfriend, was there to support him, bundled up in a thick coat and scarf.
As the game began, Nick's team quickly took the lead. They were playing flawlessly, with Nick scoring two tries in the first half. But as the second half began, the opposing team began to catch up. They were more aggressive, tackling harder and pushing for every point. Nick was getting tired, but he refused to give up. He pushed himself harder and harder, until the final whistle blew.
The score was tied, and it was up to Nick to make the winning kick. He took a deep breath and ran towards the ball, kicking it with all his might. The ball soared through the air, but it was just a little too high. It hit the crossbar and bounced back onto the field.
Nick fell to his knees, his head in his hands. He had let his team down. Tears began to stream down his face as the opposing team celebrated their victory. Charlie ran onto the field, ignoring the cheers and jeers of the crowd. He knelt down beside Nick and wrapped his arms around him.
"It's okay," he whispered. "You did your best."
Nick shook his head, unable to speak. He felt like a failure, like he had let everyone down. Charlie held him tightly, rubbing his back and whispering words of comfort. They stayed like that for a few minutes, until Nick's sobs subsided.
"Come on," Charlie said, helping Nick to his feet. "Let's go home."
They walked back to their apartment, Nick's head hanging low. Charlie didn't say anything, knowing that Nick needed time to process his emotions. When they got home, Charlie made them both a cup of tea and they sat down on the couch.
"I'm sorry," Nick said, finally breaking the silence. "I let everyone down."
Charlie shook his head. "No, you didn't. You played your heart out, and that's all anyone can ask for."
"But I missed the kick," Nick said, his voice cracking.
"Hey," Charlie said, placing a hand on Nick's knee. "You win some, you lose some. That's just how it goes. But you gave it your all, and that's what matters."
Nick nodded, but he still felt like a failure. He couldn't shake the feeling that he had let his team down, that he wasn't good enough.
Charlie could see the pain in Nick's eyes, and he knew that he needed to do something to help him feel better. He stood up and held out his hand.
"Come on," he said. "Let's dance."
Nick looked at him, confused. "What?"
Charlie grinned. "Come on, it'll be fun. We'll dance like nobody's watching."
Nick hesitated for a moment, but then he took Charlie's hand and stood up. Charlie put on some music and they began to sway to the beat. At first, Nick was stiff and awkward, but as the music picked up, he began to loosen up.
They danced around the living room, laughing and twirling. Nick's spirits began to lift, and he forgot about the rugby match for a little while. Charlie was a great dancer, and he spun Nick around like a pro. They were lost in their own little world, and nothing else mattered.
After a while, they collapsed onto the couch, breathless and giggling. Nick looked at Charlie, his heart full of love.
"Thank you," he said.
Charlie smiled. "Anytime, babe. I just want to see you happy."
They snuggled up together, watching the rain fall outside. Nick felt a sense of peace wash over him, and he knew that he was lucky to have someone like Charlie in his life.
"You know," Charlie said, breaking the silence. "I'm proud of you."
Nick looked at him, surprised. "Why?"
"Because you're brave," Charlie said. "You put yourself out there, even though you knew there was a chance you might fail. That takes a lot of courage."
Nick felt a warmth spread through his chest. He had never thought of it that way before. Maybe he wasn't a failure after all. Maybe he was just a brave person who had taken a risk.
"Thank you," he said, leaning in to kiss Charlie.
They kissed for a long time, lost in each other's embrace. Nick felt a sense of gratitude wash over him, knowing that no matter what happened on the rugby field, he had Charlie by his side.
In the end, it didn't matter that they had lost the match. What mattered was that they had each other, and that was enough. They spent the rest of the day cuddled up together, watching movies and eating popcorn. And Nick knew that he was the luckiest person in the world to have someone like Charlie in his life.
