PREVIOUSLY ON TIL THE END:
"Now you're all bloody..." "I don't care"
"GLENN!"
"I'm okay."
"Atlanta City, where we come."
NOW:
It was bound to happen.
We ran out of fucking gas.
We were on a highway with crashed cars everywhere. We were only a couple of hours from Atlanta, so we were pretty annoyed that the gas ran out at a time like that.
I got out of the car, and grabbed the spare gas carton, Glenn following me as I limped towards a car. "What're you doing?" He asked. "Getting gas," I say, connecting the hose to the carton. "You can't do that! That's, illegal!" Glenn protested, "Do you see any living cops around to arrest me?" I sassed, glancing over my shoulder. I took a deep breath, "Sorry for snapping, it's just... We're so close and we're losing time because of gas..." I muttered, filling it up and heading towards the car to fill up the tank.
"Y/n, I'm not great with reading people, but there's no way that you're this upset about the gas. You can tell me what's wrong. I won't judge you," Glenn said, helping me fill up the tank. When it was done, I set the carton down and took a deep breath.
"I'll never see my friends and family again. Sure, my family was horrible, but they were still my family," I say softly. "And natural laws don't matter anymore. If they did, there would be police and army men everywhere. And I bet the hospitals are all run down too. There's no wifi. We are on our own," I say, my voice beginning to break, and before I can speak, I begin to sob. Glenn put his hand on my shoulder in a comforting way.
Here's the thing about me, when I realized the dark, cruel truth of reality, I broke down. It's like I have a huge weight levitating on my shoulders and whatever's holding it up, snaps and lets it all crumble and break all over me.
I've always lived in my little world. I have always been in my head, so when I have to face facts, it hurts more. It's stupid, I know, but when you come from a family like mine, reality is hard to face.
And in a world like this, where the dead rule the living, where your loved ones are always in danger, where there is no way anyone like the police can help you, it hurts way worse.
Like I said before, Glenn is all I have left.
Speaking of Glenn, he snapped me out of my thoughts by waving his hand in my face. A common thing that people did to catch my attention when I zoned out of reality.
"Y/n? Can you hear me?" He asked. I shook my head and rubbed my eyes, "Yeah... Yeah, sorry," I sniffled, looking back at him. "It's okay," Glenn took a shaky breath before continuing, his eyes were glossed with tears, but he sounded normal, "I know we can't see our friends and families anymore... But we have to stay strong. I know it'll take time, but at least we have each other... And... And to me, that's good enough," He said gently.
I looked up at him, slowly nodding my head, and wiping my tears. Glenn rubbed my back gently for a few moments until he broke the silence. "I'm gonna go refill the can so we have gas for later, okay? Wait in the car for me," Glenn whispered. I only nodded, limping my way towards the passenger side and getting into the car.
Even though I've barely known Glenn, it feels like I've known him for years, but we're too awkward to hug and shit, but we still have a very close bond. Over three days, we've told each other everything about each other. We had nothing to hide, and since no one else was around, we wanted to get to know each other.
Before all of this, all I knew about Glenn was that he delivered pizza, went to the same college as me, as well as in some of my classes, was very smart, fast on his feet, respectful, and kind to everyone around him. He had the energy of the wimpy, skinny kid who got bullied, but he just didn't care. He seemed so carefree, yet so tense. Since college isn't the best, we barely saw each other except for classes or seeing each other on campus... Or when I randomly bought a pizza because I was either hungry or just wanted to see his face... Or both. Don't you dare judge me, Glenn is a cutie, you can't ever change my mind.
