"Mary, you've been summoned by her ladyship." A servant called for a woman named Mary, who was busy ordering people around. She wasn't even the head maid, yet she harbored the feeling that she was amongst the highest, due to her Baron title. Unbeknownst the fact that a Baron's position is not something that could be proud of, among the commoners.
After all, it's nothing compared to the highest ranks they were serving.
"Who? Is it the Saint?" Mary asked. Excitement glint in her face as she looked at the servant. Who wouldn't be excited if the saint called her? She's the real power in this dukedom. Everyone, even the Duke spoil her more than her twin sister. Speaking of her twin sister, Mary wished for that woman not to call her. It makes her stomach feel sick every time she has to be fake with her.
She could never have anything if she wished to her stay at that woman's side. No gold to bury or jewelries to hide.
"To tell the truth, it's not the Saintess." The maid answered, making Mary's face fall into discouragement. The glint in her eyes vanished, replaced by irritation and anger. She had her hopes up and to think she'd hear something so disappointing was making her day even more bad than it seems.
"Tell her that I am far too busy to handle her affairs." Mary immediately rebutted, turning her back against the maid who was irritated at her behavior. I mean, who does she think she is for declining her master's offer?
"You know that this is not something that you can decline, right? You're the one who volunteered to become her maid. Don't forget that fact." The maid sighed, reminding her about the thing that she volunteered years ago. That seems to be effective as Mary stopped from walking back to where she came from.
"Must you be so kind to me for making me remember that hideous day?" Mary groaned, facing the woman who was looking at her directly. "Just because you served right under the Saint, doesn't give you the opportunity to show off your position." She said, walking towards the woman named Olivia, who was looking straight into Mary's eyes.
"I did not do such thing, Mary. Nor did I tried to parade my work line. We have the same workload." Olivia answered, staring right into Mary's glaring eyes. What was she upset about? Is she experiencing some kind of delusions that she's trying to manipulate herself about the things that she thinks off?
That's a disease. That's not great at all.
"Watch your tone, woman. I am still a noblewoman. You're a lowly commoner." Mary growled, intimidating Olivia who wasn't even bothered with her words and just sighed at her arrogance. She was trying to flaunt her rank but in terms of work, she's nothing more than a worker, with no title here in the Duke's palace. A normal woman who wants to work and earn, just like them.
"You're just a worker here, Mary. Earning living wage to feed yourself. Your arrogance has no place in this palace." Olivia commented and walked passed at Mary who was speechless. She had not expected her to fight her head on, however that was something that she could not tolerate. "How dare that lowly commoner compare myself to her?!" She mumbled to herself, fuming mad as she turned around, only to find no one in the halls.
"Fucking bitch." Mary muttered, her knuckles turning white as she clasped into fists, still could not move on from getting compared to every commoner in working in this damn palace.
Meanwhile, Felicia smirked. She liked that woman's attitude. She was like a force, a fortitude. She was calm and she knew what words to say. Her seriousness has smitten her and she wanted that maid. Yet it seems that Olivia owns the woman. She could never ask for something like that.
Anyway, her eyes trailed the fuming Mary, walking away from the scene. So it looks like she has no compliance over the order, she has no intentions to go to her room, her dislike for her just because of her situation is rather... big.
