"Good morning class today's assignment is to write an anonymous poem about one of yours peers" the English says as everyone settles in "and this is for a test grade" continuing
After a few minutes, Leah rises her hand to read her poem
"My name is Leah and I got somebody Nigga
He got a girl but we keep it under cover
I love when he go deep I be like go deeper"
The class laugh- while Leah tries to continue
"After we done-"
"Uh Leah that's a enough thank you the teacher tells her as she sits down"
"Who wants to go next hm"
"I do" a girl from the back says
"This is for my boyfriend"
"I know you live here but your mind so far away
I bet you don't see me standing here waiting for your directions
Cause what you says goes no questions asked
Because you my man and I"ll do whatever you say just lead da way
After a few girls say period she finishes with
"And I'll follow with a smile on my face"
Aww's spreading though the class as her boyfriend get up and and hug her
"Okay that was beautiful uh Aries I notice you wasn't paying attention so how about you go next please so the attention is on you"
Aries picks up his head and gave his notebook and clears his throat
"Tears fills her pretty brown eyes
With a pretty mouth that's held tight
Not spilling a single word
Keeping her thoughts to herself
As we watch as they eat her alive
Each thought stabbing at her pure heart
I notice because with me she's seen in a different light
I watch and stare at her beauty because it's rare
Like an undiscovered talent not ready to be share
I want her for myself
I haven't heard her speak but her eyes tells me her story
Now every time I look her one question hits my mind : Can I be yo peace?"
After a few seconds the class begins to clap while in shock not thinking he was any good
"Well Mr. Baker that was amazing I think you didn't can write like that see me after class please who's next"
" can I go next ma'am?" "Of course"
He began to read
"School, when defining the word you get a simple definition which is:
"an institution for educating children."
But what if I told you its way more to it
Let me explain the reasoning for my questioning
From grades 4-8, it was hell for me
Learning to fight at a young age
And I'm not talking about physically
I had to learn to fight those battles mentally
Because the words people say,
the kids your own age looking down on you,
as if there were better than you in each and every way
changes the way you feel, the way you think
I learned that the hard way, by trying to fit somewhere that had little space
Years went by I finally learned my lesson
That my mom always taught me, I just never care enough to pay attention
I'm in tenth grade now and I know I was never meant to be the same
I was always told to be different
So I make my own rules no matter what they say I never listen
Because I remember all those years
But all is forgiven"
He finishes up sit back down
A couple "that's real" come from students
Great job the English teacher compliments
"One more before the bells rings anyone else?"
Every one watches as Dove hand raises
and motions her notebook toward the teacher to read
"Okay I will be reading Doves poem everyone show the same respect"
Some students roll their eyes and smack their teeth but none they less listen
"Okay here we go"
" I notice, I stare,
I watch just like you do
I see behind the red tinted eyes, and mysteriously smirk
were just alike hiding something we're afraid to let out, holding on things that's tearing us apart from the inside out ,
opens wounds with no help to heal,
you can't fool me because I'm just like you broken in a unfixable way
But you can't bring me peace because in my world it's foreign
We're just two indifferent people living in the same cruel world"
The class stare at the pair as they start to put the pieces together
The pair locks eyes and the first time in years Dove speaks quietly to Aries
"You can't fix me, I was made to be broken"
"Who told you em lies"
"No one they showed me"
"They told me the same, look at me now"
