"Claire!" a shout was heard. "We need to go."
I'm Claire Adams, twenty-one years old, a former office worker here in the city. Life here moved so fast, and I find myself needing to catch up. Living here seemed too boring, having to wake up early, go to work, just the same routine. I wanted to explore different things outside, all by myself. I have to learn how to live with only myself. Yes, I have my brother Jack taking care of me, but I know that I need to separate with him someday, when he gets a wife and starts a family. And so, I decided to give my life a change, by buying a farm an advertisement in the newspaper advertised.
My brother knew that I was leaving, and he was against it at first. He believed that I can learn to be independent without leaving him. He kept on complaining about my decision, reprimanding me about me making decisions without consulting him. I know that it was wrong, but I stood my ground. And in the end, he finally gave up. Then he confided to me, the reason why he doesn't want me to leave.~Flashback~
"I can go by myself, Jack. I can handle myself already. I'm already 21." I kept on telling him.
Jack continued scolding me. He kept on telling me the same things; that I should consult him first before making decisions, that I should hear his opinion first, etcetera. I just listened, but I wanted to know his reasons. I wanted to know why he doesn't want me to leave, because really. I believe that I can do live by myself now. I have work to do there. I wanted to explore things, and living in a farm seemed to solve everything. So why, why doesn't he want me to go?
"Just tell me Jack. Be honest. Why don't you want me to leave? You can handle yourself; you're old enough already."
"You wanna know why?"
"Why?" I asked.
"Because I don't want you to come back here, whining about how painful your experiences will have been. I want you to be independent, yes, but you don't need to leave. I don't want you to be alone whenever you feel all down, whenever you feel like giving up. I don't want you to be all alone when you started feeling pain."
Jack... I just thought. He's really concerned for me.
"Don't worry, I will be fine. I believe that I can manage this, and that I can overcome the challenges I'll face. Thanks for the concern, Jack, but I can do this. If I did not, then scold me for as long as you want. But I have a firm resolve of going there. I'll leave."
"Huh," he sighed. "I guess I can't do anything about it. Well then, go. But take care of yourself. I don't want something ridiculous happening to you."
I smiled at him. "There's no chance of that happening. I'll make sure of that."
"Don't you dare forget me," he warned, as he glared at me. "I'll punch you if you did.
I laughed. "How can I forget this big bully brother of mine? Don't worry, if I have time, I'll call you, okay?"
"That's a promise."
"Promise." I said, as I hugged the guy in front of me.
~End of Flashback~
And today, today is the day where I need to leave him, where a great change will happen in my life. I went out of the house as my older brother brought my luggages and put them inside the back of the car. He drove me to the harbor, and as we reached the place, I gave him a warm hug, and felt tears streaming down my cheeks.
Tears, yeah. And this is because I'll miss that guy so much, his voice, just about everything. I'll miss this guy I call my brother. I'll miss Jack so much.
"Your promise, don't forget it, idiot," he said as he wiped my tears. "And stop crying. You said you can handle yourself already."
"Yeah, so shut up," I said, wiping my tears as I smiled. "I have to go now. The boat's here already."
"Take care, Claire!" he shouted, yelling at my retreating figure.
And with that, I left my old life.
